ERP & MES Integration for Coil Wrapping Lines: Event-Driven Production Connectivity
ERP and MES integration for coil wrapping should solve traceability problems, not protocol preferences. Map trusted events, define field ownership and design exception handling before choosing technology for reliable production-line connectivity.

ERP, MES, and Production-Line Integration for Coil Wrapping
Integration should solve a traceability or decision problem, not satisfy a preference for a protocol. If a local packaging record is enough, an enterprise interface can add unnecessary failure modes. If the plant must relate an order, coil, material, package result and location, define the event and ownership before choosing technology.
Start with Events the Business Must Trust
Map the events needed for the actual process: instruction received, coil identified, recipe confirmed, wrapping started, package inspected, label issued, package released, exception raised and correction approved. These are examples; the final list must match the customer's systems and process.
For each event, identify producer, consumer, acknowledgement, time boundary, owner and what makes the record final.
Give Every Field an Owner
Possible fields include coil identification, dimensions, recipe revision, material batch, timestamp, package result, exception and destination. Each needs a source system, format, required/optional status, correction rights, retention decision and accountable owner. A field with no owner is not reliable traceability.
Design the Non-Normal Path First
Define expected behaviour for unavailable service, incomplete data, duplicate command, label failure, interrupted power and manual correction. The local machine must stay within its approved operational and safety boundary, while the record shows what happened and who resolved it. A successful normal demonstration is not integration evidence.
Stage Acceptance
Stabilise the local process and field list first. Integrate a limited agreed event set. Then validate reporting, permissions, recovery and auditability through the project FAT/SAT plan. Each stage should name its owner, evidence, open item and safe fallback.
A Practical Next Step
Run an interface workshop with production, automation, MES/ERP, quality, maintenance and security owners. Leave with an event list, field dictionary, responsibility matrix, exception matrix, supported-interface decision and evidence plan.
