Stainless Steel Coil Packing Line: Protecting the Finish

Automatic Stainless Steel Coil Packaging & Wrapping Lines

For stainless steel coils, surface integrity decides commercial acceptance. A coil can leave the line fully wrapped and still be rejected if a roller, strap or packaging layer has marked the finish. We design automatic coil packing line systems for stainless steel coils, both narrow slit coils from slitting-and-shearing lines and wider master coils (see our stainless steel coil packaging line video). Each line combines coil handling, eye-through wrapping and strapping, and is configured around the customer's coil range and packaging specification.

Slit Coil vs. Master Coil Packaging Workflows

For stainless slit coil packaging we use the same line concept as for slit carbon-steel coils. The main differences come from the finish requirements: which surfaces may be contacted, which wrapping layers are used, and how the finished coil is inspected.

Typical line flow for slit coils (connected to the slitting line exit by coil car or turnstile):

  1. Turnstile: receives the slit coils.
  2. Coil down-ender: separates one coil from the turnstile and turns it 90° from eye-to-wall to eye-to-sky for horizontal online packing.
  3. PU-covered roller conveyor: moves the coil to the wrapper.
  4. Eye-through coil wrapping machine: wraps the coil with paper and stretch film.
  5. Coil strapping: secures the coil (see our automatic steel coil strapping machine video).
  6. Conveyor to stacking and pallet wrapping: prepares the coils for shipping.

Stations are selected per project. For example, a 2024 stainless slit-coil project used a down-ender, a wrapping machine, a conveyor and a control system.

Slit vs. Master Coil Technical Specifications

Parameter Stainless slit coil project (example) Steel coil packing line, slit coils (standard range)
Coil weight 20–150 kg 100–3000 kg
Coil OD 600–1250 mm 900–1400 mm
Coil ID 280–508 mm 508 mm
Coil width 15–30 mm* 15–450 mm
Packing speed — 20–30 coils/hour (depends on configuration)
Power 415 V, 4P, 50 Hz 380 V, 3 phase, 50 Hz

* The 2024 project specification listed 5–30 mm. The automatic down-ender handles coils from 15 mm wide; narrow coils are generally taped and strapped manually (see Narrow slit coils below).

We configure other voltages and coil ranges to each project; for example, wider coils such as 1000 mm wide coils can be strapped automatically or manually. For heavy master coils we also supply radial strapping machines; see below.

Packaging Line Equipment Specifications

Automated Coil Down-Ender & Tilting Station

  • Coil down-ender: PLC-controlled. It separates and picks up single coils from the turnstile, then tilts them 90° from eye-to-wall to eye-to-sky.
  • Hydraulic lift and tilt; V-shaped platform keeps the coil from falling
  • Minimum slit-coil width that can be down-ended: 15 mm
  • Cycle time per coil: 20–30 s
  • Conveyor: 1600 mm long, motor approx. 0.45 kW, rollers covered with PU, automatic positioning for different coil widths

Eye-Through Stretch Wrapper (Stainless Slit Coil Wrapping Machine)

  • Synchronized multi-layer wrapping: the 2024 stainless project wrapper applies two layers (paper + stretch film) together
  • Packing materials: paper, LDPE, woven tape (the standard line also supports VCI paper and composite film)
  • Overlap adjustable by inverter: wrapper capability 20–90% (the 2024 stainless slit-coil project was specified at 20–60%); tension control for the wrapping tape
  • Stretch film is the normal outer material because film rolls are long; paper rolls are short, so on large coils one paper roll may not finish a package
  • Ring speed 20–80 r/min; roller speed 2–4 m/min; wrapping time 20–60 s per coil
  • Automatic material clamping, feeding and cutting; soft start and stop; automatic front/back coil positioning
  • All rollers on the table are covered with PU
  • Best wrapping result on coil OD 680–1200 mm. OD 600–680 mm can be wrapped, but the surface finish of the wrap may be less even than on larger coils.
  • Main components: Siemens PLC and frequency converters, Autonics sensors, Schneider switches; HMI chosen per project from Mitsubishi, Siemens, MCGS or Delta

Edge Protection and Surface Interleaving

With the optional outer edge-protector device, our machine applies outer edge protectors automatically during eye-through wrapping, and the system can include a cradle roll station. Automatic application covers the outer edge only. Inner edge protectors are fitted manually or by a robot.

Narrow Slit Coils (Around 15 mm)

Narrow coils of around 15 mm are generally strapped manually. We do not radial-strap them first. Instead, the coil is secured with tape, the machine tilts it 90°, and it is then strapped through the eye with PP or PET strap, using 2, 3, 4 or 6 straps per coil.

Radial Strapping for Stainless Coils

Our radial strapping machines are built for heavy master coils.

  • Dual strapping heads (FP-32NH, pneumatic) strap two bands at once without turning the coil
  • Coil range in the quoted design: width 450–620 mm, weight up to 6.0 t, OD 1000–1400 mm, ID 550 mm
  • Steel strap 32 mm wide, 0.8–1.1 mm thick; tension 4000–20000 N
  • PLC interlocking with the production line; CE-marked

Our radial strapping machines can be used on stainless coils. PET strap is the usual choice there. Steel strap can also be used, and some customers then add edge or corner protectors to protect the surface. The parameters above come from a design quoted for hot-rolled coil; the stainless configuration is set per project. Strapping on our lines is done after wrapping, so the strap sits on the package rather than the bare surface, and steel coils generally need no extra pads at the strap points unless the customer asks for corner protectors with steel strap. Cardboard pads are mainly used for soft metals such as aluminum. Steel strap keeps the coil from unwinding in transport; PET strap secures the package, for example to a pallet, and holds formed edge protectors in place.

How to Protect a Stainless Finish on the Line

Surface Contact & Cross-Contamination Prevention

For surface scratch prevention, list every roller, support, strap and pad that contacts the coil. Our lines use polyurethane roller coating: PU-covered conveyor and wrapper table rollers. We choose nylon, PU or rubber by contact position: rollers are PU-covered, and coil car saddles are lined with nylon or rubber.

Every guide, roller, support, strap, and pad that touches the coil belongs in the approved-contact-material rule for stainless finish protection.

Multi-Layer Wrapping Configurations (Film, Paper, VCI)

Stretch film is our normal wrapping material. Where paper or VCI anti-corrosion paper is specified for the finish, it goes under the film as the contact layer; woven tape can be used as an outer layer. Set the overlap (20–90% wrapper range) and tension for the finish and the shipping route.

A fully covered coil can still be a failed package if the line introduced a contact mark or trapped contamination before the outer wrap was complete.

Protect Edges, Bore and Faces

We define where edge protectors or interleaving are applied in your package, and the release check confirms them before the coil leaves the line.

Keep the Area Clean and Manage Changeover

Clean the contact points at shift start and when switching from carbon steel to stainless. Check the first coil after each changeover.

Record a Release Check

For each batch, record the finish category, packing recipe, contact materials and the final visual check.

Visible-defect acceptance must define what is checked, from what viewing condition or internal standard, and who has authority to release the coil.

FAQ

Can the line connect to my slitting line? Yes. It connects to the slitting-line exit by coil car or turnstile.

What is the narrowest slit coil it can handle? 15 mm on the automatic down-ender. Narrow coils of around 15 mm are generally strapped manually: taped, tilted 90°, then strapped through the eye with PP or PET strap (2, 3, 4 or 6 straps).

Can 1000 mm wide coils be strapped automatically? Yes. Wide coils such as 1000 mm can be strapped automatically or manually. The ranges in the table above are examples; we configure the line to your coil sizes.

How does the line avoid marking the stainless surface? All conveyor and wrapper table rollers are PU-covered, and the coil is wrapped in stretch film, with paper under the film when the finish requires it. We agree the contact materials and the acceptance check for your finish during design.

Which packaging materials can be used? Paper, VCI paper, LDPE/stretch film, woven tape and composite film.

How fast is it? Down-ending takes 20–30 s per coil and wrapping 20–60 s per coil. A complete line packs 20–30 coils per hour, depending on configuration.

What are the delivery time and warranty? Delivery is typically 90 days after down payment for a coil packing line. We give a 2-year warranty and lifetime technical support.

What is the best coil OD for the eye-through wrapper? 680–1200 mm. Coils of 600–680 mm OD can be wrapped, but the wrap surface may be less even.

Can edge protectors be applied automatically? Outer edge protectors, yes: with the optional device they are applied during eye-through wrapping. Inner edge protectors are fitted manually or by a robot.

What overlap can the eye-through wrapper achieve? The wrapper can set overlap from 20% to 90%. Our 2024 stainless slit-coil project used 20–60%.

Which control components are used? Siemens PLC and frequency converters, Autonics sensors and Schneider switches; the HMI is Mitsubishi, Siemens, MCGS or Delta, per project.

What coils can the radial strapping machine take? In the quoted design, coils up to 6.0 t, OD 1000–1400 mm, width 450–620 mm (quoted for hot-rolled coil; the machine can also be used on stainless coils, usually with PET strap).

What do you need for a quotation? Coil weight, OD, ID, width, required output, packaging specification and site layout.
