Steel Coil Export Packaging Guide for Long-Distance Ocean Freight

Separate surface protection from load securing, preserve traceable identity and photo evidence at every handover, and agree arrival inspection before dispatch. Create one controlled specification linking materials, handling, marking, and acceptance—never rely on a generic export drawing as proof of protection.

Export packaging is a delivery system, not a thicker version of a domestic wrap. A steel coil passes through factory storage, inland handling, port interfaces, sea transport, destination handling and customer storage. The package specification must make the protection, securing, identification and evidence responsibilities clear across that whole journey.

Map the Route Before Fixing the Package

Describe the origin condition, transport modes, handovers, likely dwell periods, destination environment, unloading method and final acceptance. The purpose is not to predict every event. It is to identify who owns each risk and which evidence must travel with the coil.

The IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code is a non-mandatory global code of practice covering packing and securing cargo transport units across sea and land transport. It is useful context for a transport-unit plan, but it does not replace the carrier's requirements, a cargo-securing design, local rules or qualified logistics engineering.

Transport-unit loading and securing require the approved logistics and carrier plan for the actual route and cargo.

Specify Protection and Securing Separately

Surface, moisture and corrosion control are packaging-system questions. Prevention of movement during transport is a load-securing and transport-unit question. Mechanical edge protection, outer wrapping, saddles, dunnage, restraints and container interfaces may all be relevant, but none should be assumed from the name "export package."

State the desired coil orientation, permitted contact points, handling interfaces and packaging sequence. The final securing arrangement must be designed and accepted by the responsible logistics and engineering parties for the specific coil, transport unit, route and carrier conditions.

Preserve Identity and Package Evidence

Define the package data that must remain associated with the coil: identifier, order/lot reference, package revision, any relevant orientation or handling marks, weight source, inspection result and photo record. Marking is useful only if it remains legible and traceable after the intended handling sequence.

For each dispatch inspection, define the package condition, exposed areas, seams, edge protection, labels, photographs, record owner and disposition of nonconformity. That package of evidence supports a factual arrival discussion; it does not predetermine the cause of later damage.

Marking is useful only if it remains legible and traceable after the intended handling sequence.

Plan Arrival Inspection Before the Coil Leaves

Agree how the receiving party records exterior condition, transport-unit condition where relevant, package damage, opening condition and coil surface condition. Separate observations from causal conclusions. A late claim is harder to assess when the original package condition and handover records do not exist.

Arrival inspection records observations separately from causal conclusions — agreed before the coil leaves.

A Practical Next Step

Create one controlled export-packaging specification for the intended product and route. It should link material specifications, protection layers, handling and securing responsibilities, marking, pre-shipment inspection, arrival inspection and the project acceptance route. Do not use a generic export drawing as proof that a particular shipment is protected or correctly secured.
