Industrial Integration: Modernizing the Italian Slit Coil Packing Line for SGK Russia
1. Project Overview
This project involved the modernization of a legacy Italian-manufactured vertical slit coil packaging line at the Gonvarri Industries (SGK) facility in Kaluga, Russia.
The core objective was a surgical replacement of specific aging modules—the legacy Strapping Unit (38241-332) and Wrapping Unit (38241-342)—with high-performance automated systems from Fhopepack. The project required maintaining the original Italian conveyor backbone while significantly improving end-of-line efficiency.
2. Technical Challenges: Precision Retrofitting & “Single-Point” Integration
Retrofitting legacy European machinery requires a level of precision that goes beyond standard manufacturing. Fhopepack’s engineering team focused on two critical integration points:
Mechanical Synchronization and Gap Management
- Height Alignment: The Italian line’s original design utilized specific elevation standards. To ensure a smooth transition of coils, Fhopepack calibrated the new units to a working height of 860mm, matching the original Italian transport plane perfectly.
- Spatial Gap Filling: The removal of the old Italian units left physical gaps of approximately 700–900mm in the production flow. Rather than requiring the client to move existing heavy-duty conveyors, Fhopepack customized the chassis of the new Strapping and Wrapping units to lengths of 2610mm and 2928mm respectively. This “extended reach” design effectively bridged the gaps without altering the facility’s foundation.
Logical Integration (PLC)
The project followed the “Single-Point Connection” principle. Fhopepack’s engineers assisted in establishing a unified signal feedback loop, allowing the new units to interface directly with the Italian line’s PLC. This ensured that the slitting, conveying, and packing stages functioned as a single, synchronized organism.
3. Commercial Customization & Strategic Communication
Working with SGK’s procurement team, led by K–Sidorexxx, the project emphasized transparency and precision:
- Modular Quotation: At the client’s request, the proposal was modularized to exclude unnecessary components (such as the pallet strapping station), focusing investment strictly on the high-value packing units.
- Standardized Engineering Language: To eliminate technical discrepancies, English was utilized as the primary language for all contracts and technical specifications, ensuring that critical parameters—such as voltage, pressure, and dimensions—were understood by both the Russian and Chinese teams.
4. Financial Engineering in a Complex Trade Environment
Given the unique nature of Russia-China cross-border trade in 2025-2026, financial compliance and payment security were paramount.
VTB Settlement Channel
Fhopepack utilized its dedicated account at VTB Bank (Shanghai Branch) to facilitate the transaction. This allowed for direct Cross-border RMB (CNY) remittance, bypassing the risks associated with the traditional SWIFT system for Russian transactions.
Multi-Stage Compliance
- Payment Testing: To verify the banking route, the parties agreed on a 5% initial test payment. Only after the successful receipt of these funds did the project proceed to the full down payment stage.
- Third-Party Agreements: To satisfy Russian banking audits, Fhopepack and SGK implemented “Additional Agreements” for third-party bank agent involvement and utilized “For Payer Only” invoicing, ensuring total transparency for financial regulators.
5. Delivery and Operational Support
Under Incoterms 2010: EXW, Fhopepack provided a comprehensive support package:
- Remote Commissioning Guidance: Detailed installation manuals and remote technical support were provided to SGK’s on-site engineers to ensure a smooth “plug-and-play” experience.
- Pre-emptive Spare Parts: Critical wear-and-tear components were checked and pre-packed to ensure the client had immediate maintenance capability during the initial start-up phase.
Conclusion
The SGK renovation project serves as a prime example of “Chinese Precision” meeting “European Legacy.” By strictly adhering to the 860mm height standard and creatively filling the 700-900mm spatial gaps of the Italian line, Fhopepack successfully integrated modern automated hearts into an existing industrial body.
