Steel Coil Radial Strapping Machine: Through-the-Eye Strapping

Executive summary Radial straps run through the coil eye and around the wall, so they hold the coil’s turns together across the width. Our radial strapping machine guides the strap through the eye in a yellow track from a green main frame, and the coil turns between bands. Strap per coil follows from the coil width and the coil wall. Both are set per project.

Radial strapping cycle in the video

A large dark steel coil, still glossy from the line, stands on the green base of our radial strapping machine. A yellow U-shaped strap track reaches into the coil eye and wraps the coil edge.

Blue strap feeds in from the left through the track and around the coil wall, is pulled tight against the coil and sealed. The track then opens and moves back, and the coil turns to the next band position.

How radial strapping works

Step What happens
Position The coil stands on the base with the eye at the strap track
Track in The yellow track closes through the eye and round the wall
Feed and tension Strap runs round the track and is pulled tight
Seal and cut The joint is sealed and the strap cut
Index The track opens and the coil turns to the next band

Radial bands hold the turns together across the width, so the coil does not telescope when it is lifted. For bands around the outside of the coil, see our automatic steel coil strapping machine.

Strap length per coil

Each radial band runs around one wall section:

Band length ≈ 2 × (coil width + wall), where wall = (OD − ID) ÷ 2

Illustrative example for a 1,800 mm OD, 610 mm ID, 1,250 mm wide coil with 4 bands:

Item Value
Wall, (1,800 − 610) ÷ 2 595 mm
Band length, 2 × (1,250 + 595) 3,690 mm
Strap per coil, 4 × 3.69 m about 14.8 m

Add the seal overlap to each band when you order strap.

Band positions around the coil

Bands Angle between bands Typical use (illustrative)
3 120° Lighter, narrow coils
4 90° Most coils
6 60° Heavy or wide coils lifted often

Equal angles spread the load evenly. The coil turns by the band angle between each strap.

Controls and safety

The strap track closes through the coil eye with force, and the strap is under high tension. Keep hands out of the track and the eye while the machine runs, and stand clear of the strap line during tensioning.

The standards that apply depend on the destination market. For CE markets, ISO 12100 sets the risk-assessment method and EN 415-10 sets general requirements for packaging machines.

Selection checklist for a steel coil radial strapping machine

  • Coil OD, ID, width and weight, smallest to largest.
  • Bands per coil.
  • Strap type and width.
  • Coils per hour.
  • How coils arrive: coil car, conveyor or crane.
  • Floor space and power supply.

Engineering FAQ

Q: What does a radial strap do? A: It runs through the eye and around the wall, holding the turns together across the width.

Q: How much strap does a coil need? A: Each band is about 2 × (width + wall), times the number of bands. Our four-band example on a 1,800 mm OD, 610 mm ID, 1,250 mm wide coil needs about 14.8 m.

Q: How many radial bands should a coil get? A: Usually 4 at 90°; 3 for light narrow coils and 6 for heavy or wide coils.

Q: What should I add when ordering strap? A: The seal overlap for each band, on top of the band length.

Q: How does the machine reach the next band? A: The track opens and the coil turns by the band angle.

Q: Why does band spacing matter? A: Equal angles spread the holding force evenly round the coil, so no section of the turns is left loose.

Next step

We plan your radial strapping machine in three steps:

  1. Submit your layout drawing with coil sizes, weights and output to info@fhopepack.com.
  2. Receive a proposal within 48 hours, with the band layout and strap plan.
  3. Book a site survey to check the coil handling and floor space.
