Executive summary
A coil de-strapping line moves heavy steel coils under control instead of by hand, and the machine shown here is the handling cell at the start of that line. A robot arm grips the coil, lifts it clear, turns it and presents it for the strap removal step, then passes the coil to an inclined conveyor. Coil size, strap pattern and line pace are confirmed per project.

Why automate coil de-strapping
Steel coils arrive from the mill strapped, and cutting the straps by hand puts a person next to a heavy coil with a tight band that can spring as it is cut. A robot-based handling cell keeps that step at arm’s length and positions the coil under control.
The cell also removes the heavy lifting and turning from manual handling, so the coil is presented and handed off in a repeatable sequence. Coil weight and strap pattern are confirmed per project.
What the machine does
The machine is a robot-based handling cell built for the coil de-strapping line. A steel coil arrives standing on its edge, the robot grips it, lifts it clear of the floor and turns it, and presents the coil for the strap removal step.
Once the straps are cleared, the robot passes the coil to an inclined conveyor that carries the coil onward. Coil size and hand-off height are confirmed per project.
Robot arm and coil gripper
A white articulated robot arm stands on a fixed base next to the coil position, and a multi-finger gripper on the arm end holds the coil body. The arm works with the coil suspended, so the load is not dragged across the floor.
The gripper grips the top edge of the coil and the arm carries the load through the positioning pass. Gripper opening range is confirmed per project for your coil width.
Handling cycle and control
The cycle runs from grip to hand-off: the arm lowers onto the coil, grips it, lifts it clear, turns it as the program directs, and moves the coil toward the inclined conveyor.
A control cabinet near the cell carries the indicator lamps for the running state, and the sequence runs under the stored program for the coil type. Turn, lift and transfer paths are confirmed per project.
What the footage shows
Our footage shows a large steel coil standing on the floor while a robot arm lowers its gripper onto the coil, lifts it clear, turns it and carries it toward an inclined conveyor. A control cabinet sits beside the cell and guard rails run along the walkway, and the coil is handed over under power. It is a general demonstration of coil handling for de-strapping, so your coil size, strap pattern and line pace are confirmed with us per project.
Typical configuration
Figures below list functional design boundaries rather than numeric values, and are confirmed per project.
| Parameter | Typical range, confirmed per project |
|---|---|
| Load | steel coils standing on edge, eye horizontal (bore axis horizontal) |
| Handling | articulated robot arm grips the coil top edge |
| Gripper | multi-finger unit holds the coil body |
| Lift and turn | coil lifted clear, turned and presented |
| Transfer | inclined conveyor takes the coil onward |
| Control | cabinet near the cell, sequence stored per coil type |
| Guard | railings and zone marking around the work area |
| Electrical supply | 380 V three phase 50 Hz, or 220 V single phase for light machines, selected per project |
Selection checklist
| Question | Confirm per project |
|---|---|
| Coil range | outer diameter, width and weight |
| Strap | strap type, width and cut order |
| Cycle | hold, lift, turn and hand-off times |
| Line | conveyor hand-off height and angle |
| Site | floor space, crane access and guarding layout |
| Electrical supply | voltage, phase and frequency on site |
Operation and safety
Start the handling cycle from the control cabinet and supervise the pass until the coil is handed to the conveyor. Keep clear of the robot working zone and the coil travel path while the arm is moving.
Routine checks cover the gripper, the arm motion and the conveyor hand-off, per the machine manual. Confirm the coil is positioned for the gripper before each cycle.
Engineering FAQ
Q: What does this machine do? A: It is a robot-based cell that grips a steel coil by its top edge, lifts it clear and presents it for the strap removal step on the line.
Q: How is the coil held? A: The gripper on the robot arm holds the coil body, and the arm carries the coil through the handling pass.
Q: Why turn the coil during handling? A: The arm turns the coil as the program directs, so the coil is presented at the angle the next step needs.
Q: What coils can it handle? A: Coils standing on edge fit the cell, and the coil diameter, width and weight are confirmed per project when you send your details.
Q: What happens after the straps are removed? A: The robot hands the coil to the inclined conveyor, which carries the coil away for the next step.
