Executive summary This clip shows our circumferential strapping machine on a hot strip mill coil conveyor. Coils arrive eye-vertical on the conveyor, guide arms close round the coil, and the yellow strapping head feeds, tensions and seals a steel strap around the outer circumference. The strap stops the outer wraps from springing open in handling and storage.

What the clip shows
| Step | What you see |
|---|---|
| Infeed | Hot rolled coils travel eye-vertical on the coil conveyor |
| Positioning | A coil stops at the yellow strapping station |
| Strap guide | Guide arms close around the coil outside diameter |
| Strapping | The head feeds, tensions and seals the steel strap around the coil |
| Outfeed | The strapped coil moves on while mill staff watch the line |
Why strap around the outside
- Holds the outer wraps. A circumferential strap stops the tail and outer wraps from springing loose.
- In line. Strapping on the coil conveyor keeps pace with the mill.
- Fewer people at the coil. Staff stay clear of hot coils while the machine straps.
- Works with radial straps. It can sit next to a radial strapping station when both are needed.
Strap per coil
Worked example (illustrative).
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Coil OD (illustrative) | 1,800 mm |
| Circumference, 3.14 × 1,800 | about 5,650 mm |
| Seal overlap (illustrative) | 150 mm |
| Strap per band, 5,650 + 150 | about 5,800 mm |
| Two bands per coil, 2 × 5,800 | about 11.6 m of strap |
What we set per mill
| Setting | Depends on |
|---|---|
| Guide size | Coil OD range |
| Strap | Steel strap width and thickness |
| Bands per coil | Coil width and handling |
| Heat protection | Coil temperature at the station |
Selection checklist
- Coil OD, ID, width and weight.
- Coil temperature at the station.
- Circumferential bands per coil.
- Radial straps needed or not.
- Coils per hour.
- Conveyor type and height.
Safety
- Keep clear of the strap guide and head while the cycle runs.
- Do not touch hot coils; use the fenced walkway.
- Lock out before clearing a strap jam.
- For CE markets, the machine is designed to ISO 12100 and EN 415-10.
Engineering FAQ
Q: What does circumferential strapping mean? A: A strap closed around the outside diameter of the coil, holding the outer wraps.
Q: Where does it sit in the mill? A: On the coil conveyor after coiling, so each coil is strapped in line.
Q: How much strap does a coil use? A: (3.14 × OD + seal overlap) × bands; about 11.6 m for two bands on an 1,800 mm coil in the worked example.
Q: Which strap does it use? A: Steel strap, with width and thickness set per coil.
Q: Can it work with radial strapping? A: Yes, a radial station can be added next to it.
Q: Which standards apply? A: For CE markets, ISO 12100 and EN 415-10.
Next step
We match a hot coil strapping machine in three steps:
- Submit your layout drawing with coil sizes, weights, temperatures and coils per hour, to info@fhopepack.com.
- Receive a proposal within 48 hours with the machine data and layout.
- Book a site survey so we confirm the coil conveyor layout.
