Resumen ejecutivo
A pallet wrapping machine for big, heavy coils turns the coil on a reinforced turntable while a film carriage wraps its outside. Our heavy-duty version, the A200B, carries up to 5,000 kg on a 1,650 mm turntable, turns at up to 12 rpm and pre-stretches the film 250%. Below we check a steel coil’s weight against the turntable, show why centring matters, work out the film per coil, and explain when an eye-through coil wrapper is the better machine.
A big coil in a white protective cover sits on the yellow turntable, cradled by two black rollers set into the table surface. The turntable turns slowly, and the film from the carriage on the grey column builds up round the coil. The control box beside the column has a display and a red emergency stop; spare film rolls stand on a rack behind.

Why a turntable wrapper for coils
A turntable wrapper covers the outside of the coil against dust and handling marks, at low cost and with simple loading. It does not pass film through the eye, so the bore and the inner edges stay open. For storage indoors or short transport that is often enough. For sea freight, or when the edges must be sealed, use an eye-through wrapper.

Check the coil weight first
For a steel coil: m = π ÷ 4 × (OD² − ID²) × width × 7,850 kg/m³.

These are illustrative coils. Paper and fibre rolls are far lighter for the same size, so the turntable limit rarely bites for them.
Centring and the cradle
The coil stands eye-to-wall, with its bore horizontal, and would roll without restraint, so the two rollers in the turntable form a cradle that holds it still. The coil must sit with its centre over the turntable axis. An off-centre load swings the turntable bearing out of balance and makes the film tension rise and fall each turn.
Keep the turn speed low for the heaviest coils; soft start and stop limit the shock on the drive. The allowed centring offset and a coated cradle roller for sensitive coil finishes are confirmed at quote.
Check the turning diameter too: the coil’s diagonal in plan must stay inside the 2,000 mm maximum turning diameter. A 1,200 mm coil 600 mm wide has a plan diagonal of √(1,200² + 600²) ≈ 1,342 mm, well inside.

Take the 1,200 × 600 mm coil standing on its cradle, wrapped up and down with 3 bottom and 3 top winds. At 12 rpm one turn is 5 s, and the carriage climbs 2,900 ÷ 60 ≈ 48 mm/s.

Seguridad
We design to EN 415-6 for pallet wrapping machines, with EN ISO 12100:2010 for risk assessment and EN 60204-1 for the electrical equipment. A heavy coil on a turning table stores a lot of energy, so keep people out of the turning zone with perimeter fencing and interlocked access gates. Use the red mushroom emergency stop and the lockable disconnect. Guarding and CE documents are agreed per project.
