Executive summary
A coil packing machine solution for small coil online packing wraps each slit coil as it leaves the slitter, so coils do not pile up waiting for hand packing. Our cell links a roller conveyor, an eye-through ring wrapper and a coil tilter, for narrow coils of 30–4,000 kg and 500–1,500 mm OD. A worked example checks the packing rate against one slitter set.

Why pack small coils online
A slitter turns one master coil into a set of narrow coils in a few minutes. If those coils are packed by hand, the set waits on the floor, edges get knocked and the next set is already coming. Small coils also have soft edges, so every extra lift is a chance to damage them.
Packing online means the coils go straight from the slitter exit onto a conveyor, through the wrapper and out to the pallet, with no crane or forklift in between.
Our small coil packing cell
Our cell is built on a welded steel base with powered roller conveyors. The coil is wrapped eye to sky: it lies flat on the rollers, and the vertical wrapping ring passes through its eye and through a gap in the roller bed. Driven side rollers on swing arms hold the coil centred and turn it while the ring wraps, so the film spirals evenly round the whole section.
After the wrap, a hinged tilter turns the coil to the orientation the outfeed or stacker needs. A mesh fence closes off the work area, and the operator watches from outside it.
Coil flow through the cell
- Zuführung. Coils leave the slitter eye to wall. A down-ender turns each one eye to sky and sets it on the roller conveyor.
- Zentrum. The conveyor stops the coil at the ring and the side arms close on it.
- Wickeln. The ring turns through the eye while the arms rotate the coil, so the film overlaps all the way round.
- Schnitt. The film is cut and held for the next coil.
- Tilt and discharge. The tilter turns the coil as needed and the conveyor carries it to weighing, labelling or stacking.
Strapping can sit before the wrapper. The line can be set for 3, 4 or 6 eye-through straps.
Slit coil data
From our slit coil packaging line:
| Artikel | Narrow slit coils |
|---|---|
| Coilgewicht | 30-4,000 kg |
| Spule OD | 500–1,500 mm (extendable to 2,100 mm) |
| Spule ID | 300 / 508 / 610 mm |
| Schlitzbreite | 8–500 mm (the narrowest coils are packed as a stack) |
| Verpackungsgeschwindigkeit | 20–40 Spulen pro Stunde |
| Umreifungszyklus | ≤ 15–38 s per strap |
| Verpackung | woven fabric, VCI paper or stretch film |
| Kontrolle | Siemens S7-1200 / S7-1500F |
Wide coils (450–1,900 mm, up to 25,000 kg) run on the heavy version of the line at 5–8 coils per hour.
Worked example: keeping up with one slitter set
Illustrative order: one master coil slit into 12 coils, each 100 mm wide, 508 mm ID and about 1,000 mm OD. The slitter delivers a new set every 30 minutes.
Required rate. 12 coils every 30 minutes is 12 ÷ 0.5 = 24 coils per hour.
Leitungsrate. At 20–40 coils per hour, one set takes 12 ÷ 40 = 0.3 h (18 min) to 12 ÷ 20 = 0.6 h (36 min).
Ergebnis. The top of the range clears the set in 18 minutes with 12 minutes to spare. At the bottom of the range the line falls behind by 6 minutes each set. The real rate depends on the strap count and the wrap overlap, so we confirm it with your coil mix.
Puffer. If the line falls behind, a short buffer conveyor before the wrapper stores the excess coils. Buffer size ≈ (required rate − line rate) × set time.
Verpackungsmaterialien
- Stretchfolie. Seals against dust and moisture. The common choice for steel and aluminium slit coils.
- VCI paper. Gives corrosion protection for bright steel and copper.
- Woven fabric. Protects the edges from knocks in transport.
Combinations work too, for example VCI paper under stretch film.
Auswahl-Checkliste

Sicherheit: EN 415-10 und ISO 12100
We build the cell to EN 415-10 for packaging machines, with an ISO 12100 risk assessment. The hazards are the turning ring, the side arms, the roller conveyor and the tilter. The mesh fence keeps people out of the cell while it runs, and its access door stops the machines when opened. Film changes and coil checks are done with the cell stopped.
Häufig gestellte Fragen zur Technik
Q: Can the cell take coils straight from the slitter? A: Yes. With a down-ender or turnstile at the slitter exit, coils go onto the conveyor without a crane.
Q: How narrow can a coil be? A: Slit widths start at 8 mm. A very narrow coil is not stable on its own, so several are stacked and wrapped as one pack. The width at which we switch to stacks depends on coil OD and weight, and we set it with your coil mix.
Q: Can we add weighing and labels? A: Yes. Net and gross weight capture and barcode labels are standard options on the line.
Q: Which standard applies? A: EN 415-10 for the wrapping cell, with the CE risk assessment to ISO 12100.
