Executive summary

Packaging equipment for steel rod covers each bundle of bars in film as it runs along the line, so the bars reach the user clean and dry. Our horizontal ring wrapper for rod bundles spirals stretch film, or VCI paper, round the bundle while a conveyor carries it through. It takes bundles 2,000–6,000 mm long and up to 4,000 kg. A worked example shows how ring speed, film width and overlap set the line speed and film use.

Why cover steel rod bundles

Bright and ground steel rod rusts quickly once it is wet, and loose bars in a bundle rub and mark each other. A film cover holds the bars tight, keeps rain and dust off, and stops the ends catching during handling. For long sea freight, VCI paper under or instead of film adds corrosion protection.

How the rod wrapping line works

The rod bundle comes in on a blue roller conveyor. At the infeed a roll of film on a stand lays a sheet over the bars as they enter, before any spiral wrap goes on. The bundle then passes through the orbital ring, which turns inside a yellow mesh guard and spirals stretch film round the bundle.

A motor-driven conveyor moves the bundle forward at a steady speed, so the film goes on evenly from end to end. The wrapped bundle leaves on the outfeed roller table, and the next one follows straight behind.

Ring speed and overlap are set on the control panel beside the ring. Packs that must be covered fully can get extra turns at each end.

Worked example: speed and film use

Illustrative bundle: 200 mm across and 6 m long, with 250 mm film at 50% overlap and the ring at its top speed of 60 r/min. The bundle moves forward W × (1 − overlap) per ring turn.

Einblick in das Berechnung Lösung
Vorrücken pro Runde 250 × (1 − 0.5) 125mm
Fördergeschwindigkeit 60 × 0.125 7.5 m / min
Turns over 6 m 6,000 ÷ 125 48 Kurven
Wickelzeit 6 ÷ 7.5 × 60 48 s
Film per turn π × 0.2 ≈ 0.63 m²
Film laid, before stretch 48 × 0.63 ≈ 30 m²

Ergebnis. At 50% overlap one 6 m bundle takes about 48 s and some 30 m of film, before end turns and stretch. Dropping to 30% overlap raises the speed to 60 × 0.25 × 0.7 = 10.5 m/min and cuts the time to about 34 s, with one layer less of cover. For bundles going by sea, keep the overlap at 50% or more.

Ways to close the cover

A spiral wrap alone leaves the bundle ends open. For a fully closed pack we offer four approaches:

  1. Wrap six sides, with a second pass across the bundle.
  2. Lay a full film cover, PE or bubble, round the bundle before the spiral wrap.
  3. Lay film over the top only, as on this line. This uses less stretch film than option 2, but the unit costs more.
  4. Cover the two ends with film. This saves the most stretch film, but it is the most complex and the highest price.

If the product can take heat, shrink packing gives the tidiest finish.

Best practices for rod bundles

  • Tie the bundle first, so the bars do not slide while the ring wraps.
  • Pad or cap sharp bar ends before wrapping, so they do not tear the film.
  • Add end turns so the cover closes over the ends.
  • Use VCI paper for long storage or sea freight.
  • Keep the film tension even, so the cover is tight but does not tear.

Auswahl-Checkliste

  1. Bundle diameter, length and weight.
  2. Film, VCI paper or both.
  3. Bündel pro Stunde.
  4. End covering.
  5. Link to bundling, strapping or stacking.

Sicherheit: EN 415-10 und ISO 12100

Rod wrapping lines are built to EN 415-10, with the risk assessment done to ISO 12100. On this line the hazards that matter are the turning ring, a heavy bundle in motion and the powered rollers. The ring runs inside a yellow mesh guard, and opening the guard door stops it.

Häufig gestellte Fragen zur Technik

Q: How long can the bundles be? A: From 2,000 to 6,000 mm.

Q: What can it wrap with? A: PE stretch film, VCI paper or other covers.

Q: What sets the speed? A: Ring speed, film width and overlap.

Q: Which standard applies? A: EN 415-10 covers the wrapping machine; ISO 12100 sets the method for its risk assessment.
