The yellow cradle with its U-shaped saddle lies flat on a green open base frame. On an empty test cycle the arms lift about the base hinge, open out smoothly to full travel and return to flat. Hydraulic lines run under the base.

Why tilt hydraulically

Turning a coil with a crane means lifting it off-centre and letting it roll over onto timber. The edges are damaged and the load swings. A hydraulic tilter holds the load in a cradle for the whole turn. Hydraulic cylinders give a high force in a small space and move smoothly at both ends of the stroke, which suits heavy, dense loads such as steel coils.

Tilting sequence

1. The load is set in the cradle by crane or forklift.
2. The operator starts the tilt from outside the turning area.
3. The cylinders turn the cradle through 90°.
4. The cradle stops at the end position and holds.
5. The load is taken out in its new position.
6. The cradle returns for the next load.

Cylinder force check

At the start of the tilt the cylinder must lift the load about the hinge:

**Cylinder force ≈ load weight × lever arm of load ÷ lever arm of cylinder**

Example only: a 10 t coil whose centre of mass sits 600 mm from the hinge, with the cylinder acting at 400 mm, needs about 10 × 600 ÷ 400 = 15 t of cylinder force at the start. The force falls as the load passes over the hinge, and the hydraulic valves then control the lowering so the load does not drop onto its new side.

Foundation and layout

The base carries the full load plus the dynamic load during the turn, so it is anchored on a flat concrete floor. Pad thickness and anchor layout are given on the foundation drawing for your model. A pit is used where the cradle must sit level with the floor for loading by roller or coil car. Leave room for the load to swing through its full radius, and keep the hydraulic unit outside the turning area.
