Samenvatting

An automatic pallet wrapping machine turns the pallet on a turntable while a film carriage travels up and down the mast, then grabs, cuts and wipes the film without an operator. Our B200 has a 2,000 kg turntable running at 3–12 rpm and pre-stretch up to 200%. In a typical automatic quotation the cycle is under 2.5 minutes per pallet, at least 24 pallets an hour.

On this turntable wrapper a tall load stands on the orange turntable beside a dark grey mast and film carriage, with the control box and screen mounted on the mast. For the first cycle our operator ties the film tail onto the load by hand before automatic mode is engaged. Beside the turntable sits the pneumatic film grab and cut arm, fed by blue air lines, which takes over film start and cut in automatic mode.

What makes a pallet wrapper automatic

A semi-automatic wrapper needs the operator at the start and end of every pallet: to tie on the film and to cut it off.

An automatic wrapper removes both steps. The film is held by a gripper, cut by a hot wire and wiped onto the load, and the gripper keeps the new film end ready for the next pallet. With infeed and outfeed conveyors the pallet arrives and leaves without a forklift at the wrapper, so the machine runs in a line.

Turntable and conveyors

• Capaciteit. The B200 turntable carries 2,000 kg; 2,500–3,000 kg is an option.
• Diameter. 1,800 mm or 2,000 mm are options on the B200; the automatic line quoted below uses 2,200 mm.
• Rijden. Chain drive on a ring gear bearing, with soft start and stop so tall loads do not lean.
• Snelheid. 3–12 rpm, with a jog button to position the turntable.
• Transportbanden. The turntable and the infeed and outfeed conveyors sit at one level, so the pallet runs straight through.

Filmtransport en voorspanning

Pre-stretch is where an automatic wrapper saves film. Rollers in the carriage stretch the film before it reaches the load. On the B200 the pre-stretch goes up to 200%, and other ratios can be built to order; the automatic line in the quotation uses 250%, with 100% to 300% as options.

At 250%, 1 m of film off the roll becomes 3.5 m on the load.

The carriage is driven by its own DC motor, and a photocell measures the load height. On the HMI the operator sets the bottom, middle and top layers, from 0 to 99 winds each, plus re-wrap, overwrap and overlap. Independent top and bottom counters and a cycle counter record the work.

Film opnemen, knippen en wissen

The automatic mechanical hand is what removes the operator:

1. Pneumatic scissor-action gripper bars clamp the film at the end of the wrap.
2. Een gloeidraad snijdt de folie door.
3. A soft brush wipes the film tail flat onto the load.
4. The gripper keeps the new film end clamped, ready for the next pallet.

On the B200 this is the pneumatic film grab and cut off option; a pneumatic top plate that holds light loads during wrapping is another option.

B200 and automatic line data

Worked example: 1,200 kg pallet on the automatic line

This example uses the automatic line from the quotation (250% pre-stretch, 2.9 m/min carriage), not the standard B200 carriage. Take a pallet of 1,200 × 1,000 × 1,500 mm and 1,200 kg, wrapped with 500 mm film, 3 bottom and 3 top winds, turntable at 12 rpm.

Resultaat. Wrapping takes about 92 s. Pallet transfer in and out, film grab, cut and wipe fill the rest of a cycle of up to 150 s; conveyor speed and dwell times are set per line and confirmed at quote. This gives 3,600 ÷ 150 = 24 pallets per hour, the quoted minimum. Each pallet uses about 0.26 kg of film.

Selectie checklist

1. Pallet size, maximum height and weight.
2. Pallets per uur.
3. Conveyor line or forklift loading.
4. Load stability: light or loose loads may need a top plate.
5. Film grade, width and pre-stretch target.

Veiligheid: EN 415-6 en ISO 12100

Pallet wrapping machines are governed by EN 415-6, the dedicated safety standard for pallet wrappers, with the risk assessment to ISO 12100:2010. The turntable and the rising carriage are the main hazards. Controls include a red mushroom-head emergency stop and a lockable electrical disconnect; guarding and CE documents for automatic lines are agreed per project.
