> The mold flipping table FHOPE builds as an L-type unit turns a mold 90° between two plates set at right angles, so a mold standing on its base ends up lying on its back. Ours can be set in a pit with the lower plate flush with the floor, for loading by crane or forklift. A worked example works out the swing zone and hinge torque for a 6 t mold.

Why an L-type flipper

A tilt table lifts one plate and lets the mold stand up on its edge. An L-type flipper has two plates joined at a right angle. The mold is set on one plate and rests against the other, so it is supported on two faces for the whole turn. At the end the second plate is underneath and the mold has rolled 90° onto it.

That suits molds that must go from "standing" to "lying" for opening, insert work or storage, without a crane flip. For the safety case against crane flipping, see [why 90-degree mold upenders are replacing overhead cranes](https://www.fhopepack.com/videos/the-roi-of-safety-why-90-degree-mold-upenders-are-replacing-overhead-cranes-in-industrial-toolrooms/).

Our orange L-type flipper in a pit

Our orange flipper sits in a floor pit next to the toolroom aisle. One plate stands upright, the other lies flush with the floor, and a heavy hinge joins them at the corner. A dark steel mold frame stands against the upright plate.

Hydraulic cylinders below the floor roll the L through 90°. The upright plate comes down flat to the floor, and the mold ends up lying on it, ready for the crane. The operator stands well clear at the side.

The 90° flip

1. **Load.** The mold is set on the lower plate and pushed back against the upright plate.
2. **Clear.** The operator moves to the control position, out of the swing zone.
3. **Flip.** The cylinders roll the L about the hinge. An inverter varies the hydraulic pump speed, so the oil flow and the turn are slow at the start and end.
4. **Land.** At 90° the former upright plate lies at floor level with the mold on it.
5. **Unload or return.** The mold is lifted off, or the L rolls back with the mold to its first position.

Pit or floor mounting

Our flipping tables can be fixed on the floor or set in a pit for ground-level handling.

- **Pit.** The lower plate is flush with the floor, so a forklift or a low crane lift can place the mold. The pit needs drainage and a cover or guard when the L is upright.
- **Floor.** No civil work, but the mold has to be lifted to the plate height, and the turning L stands higher.

The pit depth is the frame height h plus clearance for the cylinder mounts, the pivot stops, leveling shims and a drainage sump. We give it on the foundation drawing, with the cable and hose conduits.

Worked example: a 6 t mold

Illustrative mold: 6 t, 1,400 mm long (along the lower plate), 1,200 mm high, set tight in the corner of the L.

**Swing zone.** The farthest corner of the mold is √(1,400² + 1,200²) ≈ 1,844 mm from the hinge. Nobody may stand within that radius, plus a margin, while the L turns.

**Hinge torque at the start.** The centre of gravity sits about 700 mm out and 600 mm up from the hinge. The cylinders must lift a moment of m × g × x = 6,000 × 9.81 × 0.7 ≈ 41 kN·m.

**Over-centre point.** The centre of gravity starts 40.6° above the horizontal, measured from the hinge. It passes over the hinge after 90 − 40.6 ≈ 49° of turn. From there the mold's weight drives the turn, so the hydraulic circuit must hold it back to land softly.

| Comprobar | Fórmula | Resultado |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Swing radius | √(L² + H²) | 1,844 mm |
| Start moment | m × g × L/2 | 41 kN·m |
| Over-centre angle | 90° − atan(H/L) | 49° |

**Cycle.** One flip takes t = t_load + t90 + t_unload. We confirm the tilt time t90 for your design at quote.

Control and safety features

From our mold flipper pages:

- Electric limit switches and mechanical stoppers end the travel.
- The table can stop at any angle and holds if the power fails.
- The speed is adjusted by an inverter on the hydraulic pump, slow at the start and end of the turn.
- The hydraulic drive moves the mold smoothly, without impact.
- The drive is designed with a 20% allowance over the rated load.

Capacity, plate sizes, motor power, oil volume and machine weight are set by your mold and confirmed at quote.

Seguridad: EN 415-10 e ISO 12100

We use EN 415-10 as the reference for this mold handling machine, with the risk assessment to ISO 12100. The hazards are the swing zone of the L, the crushing gap at the hinge, the open pit and the load passing over centre. The swing zone is marked on the floor, and the control position is outside it. When the L is up, the pit edge is guarded or covered.

Preguntas frecuentes sobre ingeniería

Q: Why does the mold need to sit tight in the corner?
A: A mold set away from the upright plate tips onto it as the L turns. That is a shock load on the mold and the frame.

Q: What holds the mold after it passes over centre?
A: The hydraulic circuit. It meters the oil so the L lands at the slow end speed rather than falling.

Q: Can the flipper turn 180°?
A: An L-type turns 90°. For 180° we build a two-stage or book-type flipper.

Q: Which standard do you use?
A: We apply EN 415-10 as the safety design benchmark for this handling machine, with ISO 12100 risk assessment. The risk assessment decides the guarding of the swing zone, such as light curtains or interlocked barriers. It also sets the hydraulic holding valves that keep the L in place if a hose fails.
