> A coil car (steel coil cart) is a powered carriage on floor rails. It lifts a steel coil on a V cradle, holds it, carries it along the line and sets it down on the next station. It takes the coil off the crane hook for the short, precise moves that cranes do badly: loading a wrapping or strapping station, a decoiler, or an outfeed rack. Below: how a coil car works in a packing line, how to size its lift and capacity, one car or two, and the safety points.

¿Por qué usar un coche de bobina?

An overhead crane is the right tool to move a coil across the bay, but not to thread it onto a wrapping ring or a mandrel. Every crane placement means a slinger, a swinging load and minutes of fine positioning. A coil car does the last few metres on rails: it always stops in the same place, at the same height, so the station can start straight away.

It also takes the crane out of the cycle. While the car feeds the packing station, the crane is free to bring the next coil or take away a finished one.

How a coil car handles a coil

1. **Receive.** The crane sets the coil, eye horizontal, onto the car's V cradle at the loading point.
2. **Clamp.** Side arms close in and hold the coil so it cannot roll during travel.
3. **Travel.** The car runs along its floor track to the station; a red lamp shows it is active.
4. **Lift and place.** The cradle lifts the coil to the station's centre height, and the coil is transferred onto the station rollers, saddle or mandrel.
5. **Return.** The car lowers and runs back for the next coil, or waits to take the wrapped coil to the outfeed.

The operator runs the car from a control platform behind a yellow railing, and yellow-black floor lines mark its travel zone.

Sizing the lift and capacity

Two numbers decide most of the design: how far the cradle must lift, and how much it must carry.

**Lift stroke.** With the cradle lowered, the coil centre sits at cradle height plus coil radius. The car must lift the smallest coil up to the station's centre height.

Illustrative: station centre height 1,100 mm; lowered cradle top 300 mm; coils from 1,000 to 1,600 mm OD.

| Coil | Centre on lowered car | Lift needed |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| 1,000 mm OD | 300 + 500 = 800 mm | 1,100 − 800 = 300 mm |
| 1,600 mm OD | 300 + 800 = 1,100 mm | 0 mm to centre, plus clearance |

So the stroke is set by the smallest coil: 300 mm here. Every coil, even the largest, also needs a clearance lift so its bore clears the mandrel or saddle on the way in and the cradle can drop away after set-down. Total stroke = lift for the smallest coil + clearance; the clearance is fixed in the layout drawing.

**Capacity.** Size the car above the heaviest coil. For a 10 t coil with a 1.25 factor: 10 × 1.25 = 12.5 t rated.

**Travel time.** An 8 m run at 10 m/min takes 48 s; this goes into the line cycle.

One car or two: line layout

When a line has two coil stations, for example a wrapping station and a strapping station side by side, there are two ways to feed them. One option is a single car that shuttles left and right between both, or two cars, one per station. In our replies to such enquiries we recommend two coil cars. Each station then has its own feed, so one coil can be wrapped while the next is already being loaded.

Opciones

- V cradle lined with wear-resistant material to protect coil edges.
- Clamping arms for narrow or slit coils that could tip.
- Turntable on the car to turn the coil before placing.
- Interlocks with the station so the car cannot move while a coil is being transferred.

Lista de verificación de selección

1. Coil OD and ID: smallest and largest.
2. Coil width and weight.
3. Station centre heights.
4. Track length and number of stations.
5. Cycle time target.

Safety: EN 619 and ISO 12100

Equipment that conveys unit loads such as coils falls under EN 619, with the risk assessment done to ISO 12100. Where the car feeds a wrapping machine, EN 415-10 covers the wrapper. The hazards are a heavy load moving at floor level, crush points at the track ends and at transfer, and a coil rolling off. Marked travel zones, end stops, clamping arms and a guarded control platform address them.

Preguntas frecuentes sobre ingeniería

Q: Does the car replace the crane?
A: No. The crane still brings coils to the loading point; the car does the precise moves into stations.

Q: What decides the lift stroke?
A: The smallest coil and the station centre height.

Q: One car for two stations?
A: Possible, but we recommend two cars so each station is fed independently.

Q: What do you need to quote?
A: Coil OD, ID, width and weight range, station heights and track length.
