Executive summary
A rotary arm pallet wrapper with top film dispenser keeps the pallet still on the conveyor while the arm orbits it with stretch film, and an overhead dispenser lays a polyethylene sheet over the top. The side wrap then locks the sheet down, so the load is covered on five sides against dust and rain. Our equivalent solution is the RAS200 with the integrated top sheet dispenser TS, for loads up to 1,200 × 1,200 × 2,000 mm at 3–12 r/min. Below we size the top sheet, set the wrap sequence so the sheet cannot lift, and list what to send for a quote.
A tall stack of cartons stands on its pallet inside a white steel frame closed by mesh guarding. A clear sheet comes down from the overhead dispenser and drapes over the top cartons, and the arm then wraps the stack from base to top. The finished pallet leaves with the sheet folded down over the top edges and held under the side film.

Why a rotary arm for tall carton pallets
On a turntable a 2 m carton stack is spun, and every start and stop pushes the top layers sideways. With a rotary arm the pallet does not move: it is conveyed in, wrapped standing still and conveyed out. That suits tall, light or loosely stacked loads, and it keeps the load on the conveyor, so the top sheet dispenser can sit on the same frame directly above the wrapping position.

An earlier automatic arm wrapper we quoted with a top covering device came as a complete line. It had the arm machine, film carriage, top covering device and PLC with HMI control. Two conveyor sets handled in-feed and out-feed, with a conveyor motor of about 1.5 kW. Film was 500 mm wide on a 76 mm core, with bottom, middle and top winds settable from 0 to 99.

The sheet must cover the top and hang down far enough on every side for the side film to catch it:
Sheet length = load length + 2 × drop; sheet width = load width + 2 × drop.

The drop must be shorter than the band of top winds. With 500 mm film and its overlap, a 200 mm drop sits well inside the top band, so the side film holds the whole fold. The sheet roll width is chosen for the widest load side; the roll width and the available drop are confirmed at quote. Because the cut length is set per program, a mixed line does not waste sheet on smaller pallets.
Sheet first, then the top winds
- The pallet stops under the dispenser; the height sensor finds the top of the load.
- The arm wraps the bottom winds round the pallet base to tie load and pallet together.
- The carriage climbs to the top, and the sheet is laid over the load before the top winds.
- The top winds go on over the folded drop, then the carriage runs down to finish.
- The film is cut and wiped on, and the pallet is conveyed out.
If the top winds run before the sheet lands, the sheet only rests on the load and lifts in the first draught. The order above, with extra top winds set in the program, is what turns the sheet into a sealed lid.
We set this on the HMI as a separate program. Typical program choices are a full up-and-down cycle, a cycle with top sheet, and an ascent-only cycle for low loads, and the operator picks one per pallet type.
What sets the hourly rate
The 40–50 loads/h figure is for typical loads. 50 loads/h leaves 3,600 ÷ 50 = 72 s per pallet, and that time is shared by conveying in, the sheet, the wrap, the cut and conveying out.
A tall load at full 2,000 mm height with extra top winds needs more wrap time, so the rate for your tallest pallet is worked out from its height and winds and confirmed at quote. A lower arm speed for unstable stacks lowers the rate as well.
What five-sided cover protects against
Side wrap alone leaves the top open. Dust settles on the top cartons in storage, and rain or condensation runs in along the top edges in yard storage or on open trucks. With the sheet under the side film, water runs off over the fold instead of into the stack. The pallet base stays open, so put a bottom sheet on the pallet before loading if the base must be covered as well.

Sicherheit
We design to EN 415-6 for pallet wrapping machines, with EN ISO 12100:2010 for risk assessment and EN 60204-1 for the electrical equipment. The orbiting arm is the main hazard, so the wrapping zone is closed by perimeter fencing with interlocked access doors.
The conveyor openings are protected by muting light curtains, so pallets pass while people cannot. After any stop the operator resets the guard circuit before the cycle restarts. A red mushroom emergency stop and a lockable disconnect are fitted. Guarding and CE documents are agreed per project.
