Executive summary
An automatic cable wire strapping machine for short length coils winds a counted length of cable into a small coil and straps it, so retail and installer coils of a few metres to 200 m come off the line ready to pack. Short coils mean many cycles per hour, so the counter, cutter and strapper must work without operator help. This page explains the cycle, two model ranges, coil size and the speed your cable line must deliver.
Inside a guarded stainless cell, cable is wound onto a round coiling plate at the yellow column. Strapping heads on both sides then place a yellow PP strap across the finished black coil, and the coil is pushed out onto the table.

Why short coils need automation
Electricians and retailers buy cable in short coils. A 50 m coil instead of a 500 m drum means ten times as many coil changes, cuts and straps. By hand that becomes the bottleneck and lengths drift. Our coiler-strappers count each length to 0.01 m, cuts, coils and straps in one cell.
The coiling and strapping cycle
- Graf: the meter counter measures cable from the pay-off or extrusion line.
- Spule: the cable winds onto the coiling plate at the set ID and height.
- Schnitt: at the set length the cable is cut and the tail is held.
- Armband: strapping heads place PP strap across the coil, holding the turns and tail.
- Auswerfen: the coil is pushed out and the next coil starts.
Coils are held during strapping (hold-coil type), so they keep their shape.

Coil OD for a given length
Coil OD ≈ √(ID² + 4 × length × cable diameter² ÷ (π × coil height)). For 50 m of 6 mm cable on a 145 mm ID, 100 mm high coil: 4 × 50,000 × 36 ÷ (π × 100) ≈ 22,918 mm², plus 145² = 21,025 mm², gives √43,943 ≈ 210 mm OD (example only). That sits inside the 195–380 mm range. At that height each layer holds about 100 ÷ 6 = 16 turns.
Line speed and output
Required line speed = coils per minute × length per coil. At 2.5 coils per minute and 50 m per coil, the cable must arrive at 2.5 × 50 = 125 m/min. That is an average. The plate does not wind while the coil is cut, strapped and ejected, so the winding speed itself must be higher. At 2.5 coils per minute the cycle is 60 ÷ 2.5 = 24 s; if cut, strap and eject take 9 s, only 15 s are left to wind 50 m, which means 50 ÷ 15 × 60 = 200 m/min while winding (example only). When the cable comes straight from an extruder, an accumulator stores the cable that arrives during those 9 s: 125 × 9 ÷ 60 ≈ 19 m. We size the accumulator and winding speed together with your line. At 2–2.5 coils per minute the cell makes 120–150 coils per hour.
Auswahl-Checkliste
- Cable diameter and construction?
- Coil length range, ID and height?
- Pay-off drum or direct from the extrusion line?
- Line speed in m/min?
- Strap type, colour and number of straps?
- Bagging, labeling or boxing after strapping?
Sicherheit
The cell is designed to EN ISO 12100:2010 for risk assessment, EN 415-10 for packaging machine safety and EN 60204-1 for electrical equipment. The rotating plate, cutter and strapping heads are the main hazards, so the cell is enclosed in clear guard panels with interlocked doors and an emergency stop.
Häufig gestellte Fragen zur Technik
Q: What cable sizes can it coil? A: 2–6 mm on the winding and strapping model; 3–15 mm on the coiling and strapping model.
Q: How short can a coil be? A: The counter is set from 0.01 m; practical minimum length depends on cable stiffness.
Q: How fast is it? A: 2–2.5 coils per minute on the coiling and strapping model.
Q: What strap does it use? A: PP strap. On our pipe and cable coilers it is typically 10 mm wide and 0.8 mm thick, joined by friction (vibration) welding; strap count and positions are confirmed at quote.
