Why wrap doors standing up

A door lying flat needs a long horizontal wrapper, and flipping it to wrap both faces risks scratching the finish. Standing the door on its edge on a turntable takes far less floor space, and one wrapping cycle covers both faces and all four edges.

The difficulty is that a door on its edge is tall, thin and light, so film tension would tip it over. The top press device solves that: it holds the door from above, so it stays upright through the whole cycle, and the guides on the turntable keep the bottom edge in place. On our machine the top press is driven by a motor or a pneumatic cylinder.

The times come from frames 7 s apart. The rows are observed windows, so gaps of about 7 s between them are frame steps. Of the whole clip, the wrap itself takes about 63 s. Setting the guides by hand and waiting for the start take longer than the wrap. For production we fix the guides per door size and start the cycle as soon as the door is clamped.

Takt-controle

For an illustrative output of 30 doors per hour, the takt is 3,600 ÷ 30 = 120 s per door. A 63 s wrap leaves 57 s to place the door, clamp it and take it off. That is tight for a hand-loaded machine, so above about 30 doors per hour we add a door conveyor or a second wrapper.

Selection checklist for a vertical door wrapping machine

  • Door height, width, thickness and weight range.
  • Surface finish to protect: painted, veneered or glazed.
  • Film type and how many layers on the faces and edges.

  • Guarding around the turntable.

Bediening en veiligheid

The turntable, the guides and the film carriage are the danger zones, and the top press adds a crush point above the door. On the clip the guides are adjusted by hand with the machine at rest, which is the right way. The reach toward the base at about 224 s, with the turntable still turning, is the move to design out: nobody reaches toward the base or the guides until the turntable has stopped.

Stop, isolate and lock out the machine before anyone adjusts the guides, frees a door from the clamp or changes the film.

The standards that apply depend on the destination market. For CE markets, EN 415-6 covers pallet wrapping machines, the family this turntable wrapper belongs to, and ISO 12100 sets the risk-assessment method, which fixes guarding and the emergency-stop arrangement.
