This packaging equipment is our eye-through steel coil wrapper. A C-shaped ring carries a roll of stretch film, crepe paper or woven belt through the coil eye while PU-coated rollers turn the coil, so the wrap covers the outer face, both sides and the bore. Our FPS-400 covers coils of 508 or 610 mm ID, 800–1,400 mm OD, 100–400 mm wide and 100–2,000 kg, with overlap adjustable from 10% to 90%.

Here a strip coil lies flat on the roller bed and the grey C-ring passes through its eye. Each ring turn lays one band of material across the coil section, and the slow coil rotation steps the next band along until the whole coil is closed.

How the eye-through wrapper works

A steel coil cannot be wrapped on a turntable like a pallet, because the bore and both side faces must be covered too. The eye-through wrapper solves this with two motions.

1. Ring turn. The C-ring has a fixed gap. It parks with the gap at the top, the coil wall drops in through the gap, and the ring then turns through the eye. The material roll on the ring lays one band around the coil section on every turn.
2. Coil turn. PU-coated drive rollers under the coil turn it slowly, so each new band lands next to the last one with the set overlap.
3. Stop and cut. When the coil has made a full turn plus a short overwrap, the ring stops with its gap at the top again, the material is cut and the end is pressed down.

The ratio between ring speed and coil speed sets the overlap. Variable frequency drives give a soft start and stop, so the wrap stays tight without damaging the coil edges.

The FPS-400 runs stretch film, crepe paper and woven belt. PVC, LLDPE, PE, paper and HDPE are listed for the material roll. An optional double-layer setup applies two materials at once, for example paper next to the steel and film outside it for moisture protection. See how steel coils are packed with paper and stretch film. The roll sizes are 50 mm core, 100–450 mm OD and 100–150 mm wide.

Coils outside this range are built to your OD, ID and width.

Worked example: material per coil

Take a coil of 1,200 mm OD, 508 mm ID and 300 mm wide, wrapped with 100 mm material at 50% overlap. The overlap is set at the bore, where the circumference is smallest.

Risultato. About 32 ring turns and 41 m of material close this coil in one layer. This is the net length on the coil; the start, the overwrap and the cut tail add a little, and stretch film comes off the roll shorter because it is stretched. At the OD the bands spread apart, so the outer face sees less overlap than the bore. Cycle time is ring turns ÷ ring speed, and ring speed is confirmed at quote.

Sicurezza: EN 415-10 e ISO 12100

Coil wrappers are packaging machines other than pallet wrappers, so they are covered by EN 415-10, with the risk assessment to ISO 12100:2010. The turning ring and the drive rollers are the main hazards. Light curtains and emergency stops halt the machine when someone enters the zone. The coil is loaded and unloaded only with the ring stopped and its gap at the top. Guarding and CE documents are agreed per project.

Q: Can it use paper instead of film? A: Yes. It runs crepe paper and woven belt as well, or two materials at once.

Q: How is the overlap set? A: On the HMI, from 10% to 90%. The PLC matches coil speed to ring speed.

Q: How is the coil loaded? A: The ring gap stops at the top, so a crane can lower the coil through it straight onto the rollers.
