> Our master steel coil stretch wrapping machine, the FPS-2000, wraps heavy master steel coils, and steel wire rod coils on request, eye-through in VCI or stretch film. The ring opens, the coil comes in on a saddle and the ring closes through the eye to wrap it. It takes coils of 700–2,500 mm OD and 1,000–10,000 kg. A worked example checks coil weight and film length.

Which coils this machine wraps

Master strip coils come straight off the cold mill or the galvanising line, before slitting. They are wide and heavy, and they travel to service centres by truck, rail or sea. Wire rod coils come from the rod mill instead: they are looser, with gaps between the rings, and they need saddle supports shaped for that. We build the wrapper for steel strip, aluminium, copper, stainless steel and wire rod coils, with the supports and ring sized to the product.

What these coils share is that the package has to close the eye and the outside surface against water and dust. An eye-through wrap does both in one pass.

How the opening ring works

A closed ring cannot reach a coil sitting on a saddle, so the upper section of our ring opens. The coil arrives on the saddle rollers with the ring open. The ring then closes through the coil eye and turns, laying film through the eye and over the outside, while the saddle rollers turn the coil slowly so the wrap advances round it.

Power reaches the ring through a connection that lets it open and close, and a shuttle drive moves it. This is what lets the machine handle coils this heavy without lifting them off the saddle.

Our yellow FPS-series wrapper stands on a coil line inside a yellow guard rail. A bare coil sits on green saddle rollers in front of the open ring, and a second coil waits on the next station. The ring section swings down through the coil eye, wraps, and swings back up so the coil can move on.

The film roll size depends on the coil size. Smaller coils go on our lighter FPS models; the FPS-500, for example, covers 80–1,000 kg.

VCI or stretch film

For master coils we usually wrap in VCI film, which releases a corrosion inhibitor inside the package. Plain stretch film closes the package against dust and water, and paper is used where the coil must not touch plastic. The machine takes PVC, LLDPE, PE, paper and HDPE.

Worked example: coil weight and film length

A mill wraps cold-rolled coils of 1,300 mm OD, 508 mm ID and 900 mm width. These are illustrative customer figures.

**Coil weight.** Volume = π ÷ 4 × (1.3² − 0.508²) × 0.9 = 1.01 m³. At 7,850 kg/m³ for steel, the coil weighs about 7,950 kg. That is inside the FPS-2000's 1,000–10,000 kg range.

**Film path per turn.** Each turn goes through the eye, round the outside and across both faces. The radial depth is (1,300 − 508) ÷ 2 = 396 mm. One turn is 2 × 396 + 2 × 900 = 2,592 mm.

**Turns and film length.** Take 250 mm film at 50% overlap, so each turn advances 125 mm at the OD. The OD circumference is π × 1,300 = 4,084 mm, which needs 4,084 ÷ 125 = 33 turns. Film on the coil = 33 × 2.59 = 85 m.

**Film off the roll.** The 85 m is film laid on the coil. Because the film is stretched as it goes on, the roll pays out 85 ÷ (1 + s), where s is the stretch your film is rated for.

**Cycle.** Cycle time = t_load + n × t_turn + t_cut + t_unload, with n the number of turns. We give t_turn for your coil at quotation. For wire rod coils, our eye-through wrapper with two wrapping stations packs about one coil every 2 minutes.

For CE markets we use EN 415-10 as our reference, with a risk assessment to ISO 12100. The main hazards are the turning ring, the opening ring section and the heavy coil on the saddle.

Safety is interlocked in the control board, and every main drive has a safety enable. The work area needs perimeter guarding with interlocked access. Depending on the project, we supply the safety guards and CE documents, or you supply them to meet your local rules; we agree which in the contract. The cables run in conduits in the concrete foundation and in hoses where they are exposed.

Q: Can it wrap wire rod coils as well as strip coils?
A: Yes. Wire rod coils need saddle supports shaped for loose rings, and they can be wrapped in stretch film or PP woven.

Q: Why does the ring open?
A: So the coil can come in on its saddle and stay there. The ring closes through the eye and wraps without lifting the coil.

Q: Which ID does it take?
A: 508 or 810 mm.
