Why turn loads by machine
Panel lines turn stacks to inspect or sand the second face, and to even out board bow. Mould shops turn dies to work on the parting face. Warehouses turn pallets to replace a broken pallet or change to a shipping pallet. With a crane, the load swings and drops onto its edge. In a clamped frame the load stays supported throughout, so faces and corners stay intact.
How the drum upender works
1. **Load:** a forklift or conveyor places the load in the drum opening.
2. **Clamp:** the top clamp lowers and presses the load against the base platen.
3. **Turn:** the drive rotates the drum on its rollers through 180°.
4. **Release:** the clamp opens and the load sits on its former top face.
5. **Unload:** the load is taken out from the same side or passed through.
Drive and clamp design
- **Chain drive with worm reducer:** a double chain drive and worm gear reducer turn the frame smoothly and hold it against back-driving.
- **Variable frequency drive (VFD):** soft start and stop, so the load does not shift at the end of the turn.
- **Clamp for load height:** the clamp travel sets the range of stack heights.
- **Limits:** two displacement limiters stop the frame at the end positions.
- **Emergency stop:** the frame locks at any angle on E-stop.

Plywood and mould drums are built to the load; capacity, opening and cycle for those are confirmed at quote.
Checking the drum opening
**The load corners must clear the drum while it turns: drum inner diameter > √(load width² + load height²) + clearance.** For a stack 1,200 mm wide and 1,000 mm high, the diagonal is about 1,562 mm, so the drum needs an inside diameter above that plus clearance for the clamp (example only). Check the load length against the drum depth as well.

We design upenders to EN ISO 12100:2010 for risk assessment, EN 415-10 for packaging machine safety and EN 60204-1 for electrical equipment, with control safety to ISO 13849-1. The turning frame is the main hazard: keep the zone fenced or marked, and start only from the panel with a clear view.

A: Yes, stop positions can be set; 90° tilters are also built.

Q: Can it turn loose panels?
A: Yes, as long as the stack is clamped as one block.
