Executive summary Our S200 rod wrapping machine spirals stretch film round single bars, rods and small bundles as they pass through a turning ring. Motor-driven conveyors feed the rod in and carry it out, and a board centres rods of different diameter in the ring. It takes rods 10 to 200 mm across and 10 to 100 kg. A worked example sets the overlap at full ring speed and checks which rods are too heavy.

Why wrap rods one by one
Finished rods and bars scratch and pick up dirt when they rub together in a bundle or on a rack. A tight spiral of stretch film on each rod keeps the surface clean and dry until it is used.
Wrapping by hand is slow on long pieces and leaves loose ends. Our S200 lays the film at a set overlap along the whole length, at conveyor speed.
How the rod passes through the ring
- Zuführung. The rod lies on the motor-driven entrance conveyor and moves towards the ring.
- Anfang. A photocell detects the rod and sets the wrapping position automatically.
- Wickeln. The ring turns round the rod as the conveyor carries it through. Film tension is set by a brake device.
- Press and exit. Press rollers at the exit keep the wrapped rod steady on the outlet conveyor.
- Fertig stellen. The operator cuts the film. An automatic cutter is available as an option.
The S200 runs on its own or connected to a production line for automatic operation.
Centring rods of different diameter
A thin rod and a thick rod sit at different heights on a flat conveyor. If the rod is off centre in the ring, the film wraps tighter on one side.
The S200 has a board that moves up and down to centre each diameter in the ring. The operator sets it with a hand wheel when the rod size changes. Double rings and double drive wheels keep the ring turning smoothly and steadily.

Worked example: overlap, time and weight for a 100 mm rod
Take aluminium rods 100 mm in diameter and 3,000 mm long, wrapped with 150 mm film. These are illustrative customer figures.
Gewicht. The rod volume is π × 0.05² × 3 = 0.0236 m³. In aluminium at 2,700 kg/m³ it weighs about 64 kg, inside the 100 kg limit. The same rod in steel at 7,850 kg/m³ would weigh about 185 kg, too heavy for the S200.
Overlap at full ring speed. Each ring turn, the rod advances 150 × (1 − overlap). At 120 r/min the conveyor must not exceed 12 m/min. So the overlap must be at least 1 − 12,000 ÷ (120 × 150) = 33%.
| Überlappung | Vorrücken pro Runde | Conveyor speed at 120 r/min |
|---|---|---|
| 40% | 90mm | 10.8 m / min |
| 50% | 75mm | 9.0 m / min |
| 60% | 60mm | 7.2 m / min |
Overlap at low ring speed. The conveyor cannot run below 4 m/min, so the ring must turn fast enough to keep the overlap. At 20 r/min the rod would advance 4,000 ÷ 20 = 200 mm per turn, more than the 150 mm film, leaving gaps. For 50% overlap the ring needs at least 4,000 ÷ 75 = 53.3 r/min. We set ring speed and conveyor speed together on the converter.
Zeit. At 50% overlap the 3 m rod passes in 3 ÷ 9 min, or 20 s of wrapping. That is 3,000 ÷ 75 = 40 turns.
Film. Each turn covers π × 0.1 = 0.314 m round the rod. The film also runs 75 mm along it, so one turn uses √(0.314² + 0.075²) = 0.323 m. Forty turns lay about 12.9 m of film on the rod, before pre-stretch.

Sicherheit und EN 415-10
We design the S200 to EN 415-10 for packaging machines, with an ISO 12100 risk assessment. The turning ring, the conveyors and the press rollers are the main hazards. Guardrails cover the moving parts for safe operation. When a fault occurs, the indicator light alarms and shows the fault.
Häufig gestellte Fragen zur Technik
Q: Can it wrap small bundles as well as single rods? A: Yes, within 200 mm across and 100 kg.
Q: Can it run in a production line? A: Yes. The S200 can be connected to the line for automatic operation.
Q: Can it use paper or other materials? A: Different packing materials are an option.
F: Welche Sicherheitsstandards gelten? A: In CE-Märkten gilt EN 415-10 für die Maschine und ISO 12100 für die Risikobewertung.
