Why strap and wrap timber packs

Sawn timber, floor boards and panels leave the mill as loose stacks. Without straps the pieces slide when the pack is lifted; without cover, rain stains the faces, sun greys the surface and dust settles in grooves. Packed timber also needs bearers underneath, so forks can enter, and protection on the corners where straps bite.

Strapping alone holds the pack. Wrapping alone protects it. Most export timber needs both.

Three ways to wrap timber

The film cover suits stacks of boards and panels. Film is drawn from the reel over the stack as it moves along, then the upper sealing unit comes down to seal and cut, and the covered stack leaves on the conveyor.

How a timber packing line works

1. **Infeed.** The stacked pack arrives on roller conveyors.
2. **Bearers.** An automatic timber feeder places bearers under the pack bottom.
3. **Corners.** Cardboard corner protectors are placed at the top corners.
4. **Strap.** The strapping unit ties the pack, with bearers and corners, at each strap position.
5. **Wrap.** The pack is covered with film, or passes through a horizontal stretch wrapper.
6. **Outfeed.** Finished packs leave for labelling and storage.

On a horizontal wrapper, timber blocks and spacers can be fed top and bottom of the bundle automatically before the film goes on.

Worked example: straps and film

Illustrative pack: 3,000 mm long, 1,000 mm wide, 600 mm high, strapped at 1,200 mm pitch with the end straps 300 mm in from each end.

**Result.** Three straps over three bearers, and about 6.6 m² of film for a top-and-sides cover or 7.8 m² closed at the ends, before overlaps and seals.

For lighter bundles wrapped all round, our E1000 horizontal stretch wrapper takes:

The E1000 is for light bundles up to 400 kg, such as flooring and mouldings. A full sawn-timber pack like the one in the example weighs well over that, so it gets heavy-duty conveyors and a wrapper built to the pack weight.

Best practices for timber

- Strap over bearers so the strap tension clamps them in place.
- Use corner protectors where straps cross edges.
- Cover the top at least, for any pack stored outside.
- For green timber, choose a cover that lets moisture escape, or leave ends open.
- Label after wrapping, on the film, so the label stays dry.

Sicurezza: EN 415-10 e ISO 12100

Wrapping and strapping lines are built to EN 415-10, with the risk assessment done to ISO 12100. The hazards are the descending sealing unit, the strapping head, the turning ring on a wrapper and heavy packs on conveyors. We set guarding and interlocks in the risk assessment for each layout.
