Why cover the top as well as the sides
Side wrapping alone leaves the top layer open to dust, drips and condensation. For cartons stored in damp warehouses or shipped in open trucks, that open top is where the damage starts.
A top sheet closes it. Once the side film is wrapped over its edges, the load is sealed on five sides and stays clean through storage and transport.
Why the arm turns and the load does not
On this line the film carriage rides on an arm that circles the pallet. The load stays still on the conveyor, so tall carton stacks and loose top layers are not thrown outwards by rotation.
That also keeps the line simple. The same roller conveyor carries the pallet in, holds it during the wrap and carries it out, with no turntable to stop and align.
The covering and wrapping sequence on the line
1. **Infeed.** The loaded pallet runs in on the line conveyor, and a sensor identifies it and measures its height.
2. **Cover.** The integrated top sheet device draws a PE sheet over the top of the load. The length laid down is set per programme.
3. **Press.** The scissor top press comes down on the sheet and holds it, and the top cartons, in place.
4. **Wrap.** The arm circles the load while the carriage runs up and down, laying pre-stretched film round the sides and over the sheet's edges.
5. **Cut.** The film is fed and cut automatically at the end of the cycle.
6. **Outfeed.** The press lifts, and the covered pallet runs on down the line.
What the scissor top press does
A loose top sheet lifts and flaps as film is pulled round the load. The press plate sits on the sheet so it stays flat and centred until the first side wraps trap its edges.
The press also steadies tall or light stacks, so cartons near the top cannot shift under film tension. A pneumatic pallet lifter on the conveyor is a further option. It raises the pallet so the film can wrap the wooden base completely.

Worked example: top sheet size and a programme that fits the line
Take a 1,200 × 1,000 mm pallet stacked 1,500 mm high with cartons, and a line that delivers 40 pallets an hour. You want the top sheet to hang 200 mm down each side and use 500 mm film. These are illustrative customer figures.
**Top sheet.** The sheet must be 1,200 + 2 × 200 = 1,600 mm by 1,000 + 2 × 200 = 1,400 mm, or 2.24 m². The side film traps the whole overhang against the cartons.
**Turns per programme.** At 50% overlap the carriage climbs 250 mm per turn, so 1,500 mm takes 6 turns each way. Add 3 base winds and 3 top winds over the sheet edge.

**Line rate.** At 40 pallets per hour each pallet has 3,600 ÷ 40 = 90 s in the station. Transfer, sheet, press and cut take time t, so the wrap must fit in 90 − t. At the 12 rpm top of the speed range, up-and-down takes 90 s and leaves nothing. Up-only takes 60 s and leaves 30 s for t. We measure t on your line before fixing the programme.
**Film.** The load perimeter is 2 × (1.2 + 1.0) = 4.4 m. Up-only lays 12 × 4.4 = 52.8 m on the load. At 200% pre-stretch that is 52.8 ÷ 3 = 17.6 m drawn off the roll.

We design the RAS200 to EN 415-6 for pallet wrapping machines, with an ISO 12100 risk assessment. The circling arm, the descending top press and the conveyor rollers are the main hazards. Single start, reset and emergency stop buttons are standard. Fence the station so nobody can enter the arm's path while the cycle runs, and protect the conveyor openings in the fence.

Q: Can the top sheet length change between products?
A: Yes. The sheet length is set in each wrapping programme.
Q: Does it need an operator?
A: Only to change film rolls and sheet rolls. Feeding, wrapping and cutting are automatic.
Q: Will it wrap the wooden pallet base too?
A: With the pneumatic pallet lifter option, the film wraps the base completely.
