Corrugated electrical conduit and drainage tube is light, springy and easy to crush, so a coil of it behaves nothing like a steel coil in a wrapper. Our hose coil wrapping machine, known in Spanish-speaking markets as an embaladora de tubo corrugado, lays the coil flat on a supported table and wraps film through the eye, so the coil keeps its round shape and its straps stay covered.

Why corrugated coils need a soft-coil wrapper

A corrugated tube coil has little stiffness of its own. Stood on edge in a vertical wrapper it sags into an oval, and the film then locks that oval in. Laid flat on a supported table, the coil keeps its round shape while it is wrapped, and the film tension is set low enough not to squeeze the ribs of the tube.

  1. The strapped coil comes off the coiler and is laid flat on the table.
  2. The guide rollers centre the coil on the ring.
  3. The film end is fixed and the ring starts through the eye.
  4. The rollers turn the coil until the wrap closes.
  5. The film is cut and the tail pressed down.
  6. The wrapped coil is taken off for labelling and palletising.

Wrap time and film use

Wraps per coil ≈ π × OD ÷ (film width × (1 − overlap))

Film per coil ≈ wraps × 2 × (coil width + (OD − ID) ÷ 2)

Example only: a coil of OD 600 mm, ID 300 mm and width 200 mm, with 90 mm film at 50% overlap, advances 45 mm per wrap. π × 600 ≈ 1,885 mm, so 1,885 ÷ 45 ≈ 42 wraps, about 25 s at 100 r/min. Each wrap is 2 × (200 + 150) = 700 mm, so about 42 × 0.7 = 29.4 m of film per coil.

The straps hold the coil turns together; the film keeps dirt and water out of the corrugations and makes the coil easy to stack. Straps are put on at the coiler, so the turns cannot spring apart while the coil is moved to the wrapper. The film then covers the straps, which stops them catching on other coils in transport.
