Our horizontal orbital stretch wrapper keeps the product still on a conveyor and turns the film around it: a ring carrying the film roll rotates while the conveyor moves the product through it. The result is a tight spiral wrap along the whole length, at the same overlap every time.

A long grey metal box rides on a green belt conveyor into a large white ring. A side guide on the in-feed keeps it straight, and the control box stands beside the ring. The belt protects the painted surface while the box passes through.

Boxes, cabinets, panels, pipes and profiles are long in one direction. On a turntable they would need a very large table and would swing a wide circle. In a horizontal wrapper the product only moves straight, so the machine is narrow and fits into a conveyor line. All four long sides are covered, which keeps dust and scratches off during transport.

A photocell sees the front of the product on the in-feed conveyor.
The film tail is held and the ring starts turning.
The conveyor carries the product through the ring at a set speed, so the film lays on as a spiral.
At the end of the product the ring stops in its reset position and the film is cut.
The out-feed conveyor carries the wrapped product away.

Setting overlap and speed

Advance per ring turn = film width × (1 − overlap)

Conveyor speed = advance per turn × ring rpm

Example only: with 100 mm film and 50% overlap the product advances 50 mm per ring turn. At 60 r/min that is 50 × 60 = 3,000 mm per minute, or 3 m/min. Raising overlap to 70% cuts the advance to 30 mm and the speed to 1.8 m/min at the same ring speed, so overlap is set from how much protection the product needs.

Film per product

Film length ≈ (product length ÷ advance) × perimeter

Example only: a box 2,000 mm long with a 400 × 300 mm section has a perimeter of 2 × (400 + 300) = 1,400 mm. At a 50 mm advance there are 2,000 ÷ 50 = 40 turns, so about 40 × 1.4 = 56 m of film per box, before pre-stretch.
