It is specified by the distribution of coils that will actually pass through it. Two factories can both say &#8220;steel coils&#8221; and need very different handling, wrapping, and stacking designs.<\/p>\n<p>This guide helps the project team collect the dimensional, weight, and product-mix data that every serious line design needs.<\/p>\n<h2>Collect the fields that change the design<\/h2>\n<p>For each coil family, record:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Material and surface condition.<\/li>\n<li>Inner diameter and outer diameter.<\/li>\n<li>Coil width.<\/li>\n<li>Weight, including the distribution across the family.<\/li>\n<li>Coil orientation on arrival and the orientation required downstream.<\/li>\n<li>Surface temperature or sensitivity where relevant.<\/li>\n<li>Production source and release pattern.<\/li>\n<li>Packaging requirement, including protection, strapping, and labeling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do not reduce the population to &#8220;minimum&#8221; and &#8220;maximum.&#8221; The combinations that occur together matter, because width, outer diameter, and weight may not all peak on the same coil.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fhopepack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Steel-Coil-Dimensions-Diagram.webp\" alt=\"Steel coil dimensions diagram\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The diagram shows the coil dimensions that drive the design: inner diameter, outer diameter, width, and orientation. For example, a wide-coil wrapping station may be described as handling coils up to about 1,800 mm outside diameter, 1,860 mm width, and 25 tonnes. Those are example values, not a universal capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The applicable range must come from the supplier datasheet for the specific machine and product mix. Treat a reference value as a starting point for questions, not as a design conclusion.<\/p>\n<h2>Build product families<\/h2>\n<p>Group coils by the factors that change the line:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Narrow versus wide coils.<\/li>\n<li>Light versus heavy coils.<\/li>\n<li>Eye-vertical versus eye-horizontal orientation.<\/li>\n<li>Coils that need only wrapping versus coils that also need strapping, weighing, labeling, or special protection.<\/li>\n<li>Normal product versus rework, exceptional product, and hold conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A useful family has a clear rule, a clear handoff, and a clear exception route. Rare extreme coils may follow a separate route, a slower recipe, or a manual fallback.
