The line pairs two stations over powered roller conveyors.

The upender takes a steel coil lying eye horizontal and turns it through 90° to eye vertical, on a heavy frame. It has its own cabinet with a touchscreen.

The coil then rolls downstream to the eye-through wrapper. A vertical ring passes film through the eye while rollers turn the coil. One operator at the infeed console runs both stations; the handling and wrapping themselves are automatic.

Two manual jobs carry the risk:

  • Turning a coil with a crane and slings. A coil on straps can tip past its balance point and swing; the crew stands close to steady it.
  • Hand wrapping through the core. A worker bends and walks round the coil feeding film through the bore, next to sharp slit edges.

A coil upender turns a load between horizontal and vertical on a fixed base, so the coil does not swing.

Turning times of 50–100 s are deliberate: a variable-frequency profile carries the coil through its balance point slowly, so it does not rock on the cradle. Cradle size is set to the coil OD and width; as with all our equipment, each machine is built per project parameters [manufacturer rating].

The mechanical FPCT drive is an electric motor on a worm gear reducer with VFD speed control, and it holds its tilt angle under brake at any point. Where a plant prefers hydraulics, our hydraulic upenders give 90° × 2 turning at 3 t, 5 t and 10 t (2.2, 3.0 and 3.5 kW power units; 1.5, 1.8 and 2.5 t machines) and custom flat tilters to 40 t [manufacturer rating].

The wrapper feeds film through the coil core while rollers turn the coil, laying an overlapping helical wrap over the bore, the outside and both faces in one cycle.

PLC/HMI recipes set centring, tension and overlap per coil type; the operator enters the coil size and wrap spec on the screen. Film, paper and woven wrap are all options, and PET or steel strapping of the stack can follow.

The layout change is structural:

  • Coils travel on conveyors, not on forklifts across open floor.
  • Crane work moves to fixed load and unload points.
  • Walkways stay outside the guarded zone.

We place fencing, walkways and access in the layout drawing, not as a retrofit.
