An extruder does not stop: the coiler at the line end must keep up with no pile-up and no slack. If an operator coils by hand, the line slows and the coils come out loose. A high speed hose coiling machine takes the hose from the extruder, counts the length, winds a tidy coil, cuts it, and ties it with a PP strapping band at two or four points. A twin-station model switches stations at the cut, because the taping cycle must fit inside the coil time. An automatic length counter also beats counting by eye. The FCL-V400 range covers hose from 4 to 30 mm OD and coils from 300 to 500 mm OD.

The video below shows hose being wound and the finished coil coming off the machine:

Feed, winding, cutting and taping

Feed and traction. Hose runs through a feeding tube and traction wheels into the winder; the feed adjusts to keep tension steady for a tight, even coil.

Winding head. Multi-axis control lays the hose in even layers. Coil OD and width are adjustable, and a pneumatic baffle forms the coil side.

Cutter. The machine cuts each coil at the length set on the HMI.

Taping and ejection. The coil is tied with a PP strapping band at two or four points and then ejected automatically. It is a plastic band, not an adhesive tape. The demonstration machine winds blue hose, finished coils tied across with white PP band.

Step by step. The operator sets coil length, OD and width on the HMI. The hose runs through the length counter into the winding head, the winder lays it in layers until the set length, the cutter cuts, the coil moves to the taping station, and the finished coil is ejected. On a twin-coil machine, winding switches to the second station at the cut while the first is taped and ejected.

FCL-V400 data

Model

Coil OD

Coil ID

Coil height

Hose OD

FCL-V400A

300–400 mm

200–300 mm

40–120 mm

4–10 mm

FCL-V400B

300–500 mm

250–400 mm

80–200 mm

10–20 mm

FCL-V400C

300–500 mm

250–400 mm

150–300 mm

15–30 mm

All three run on 6 bar air with automatic coil feed. Other coil sizes are built on request.

Worked example

A plant extrudes 12 mm OD hose and sells it in 50 m coils, 400 mm OD, 250 mm ID and 120 mm high, at 30 m/min. These are illustrative customer figures.

Model. 12 mm hose fits the FCL-V400B (10–20 mm range), and 400 mm OD, 250 mm ID and 120 mm height sit inside its coil ranges.

Turns per coil. One layer across 120 mm holds 120 ÷ 12 = 10 turns. Radial space is (400 − 250) ÷ 2 = 75 mm, so six full layers of 12 mm fill 72 mm with 3 mm to spare — about 10 × 6 = 60 turns.

Hose per coil. Mean turn diameter is (400 + 250) ÷ 2 = 325 mm, so one turn is π × 0.325 = 1.02 m; 60 turns hold about 61 m, fitting the 50 m length with some room.

Time per coil. At 30 m/min a 50 m coil takes 50 ÷ 30 = 100 s — the window a twin-coil machine gives the other station to tape and eject. General rule: coil time t = L ÷ v; downstream cut/tape/eject must fit inside t, or the line slows.

Getting a tight, even coil

Keep tension steady: adjust the feed so the hose is neither stretched nor slack, because slack hose crosses over and the coil grows past its OD. Match coil height to a whole number of hose diameters for full, flat layers. Tape heavier or springy hose at four points, lighter coils at two.

Selection checklist

Hose material, OD and wall thickness.

Length per coil.

Coil OD, ID and height.

Extrusion line speed.

Single or twin station.

After taping: film wrapping, bagging or cartons.

For film-wrapped coils, the coiler combines with a coil wrapping machine after taping.

Safety

For CE-market deliveries, EN 415-10 is referenced as the design basis for packaging machines and ISO 12100 as the risk-assessment method; guarding is fixed for your line during factory integration. Main hazards: the traction wheels, the turning winder, the cutter and the pneumatic baffle; the machine detects errors and alarms. Keep hands away from the traction wheels while hose runs.

Engineering FAQ

Can it keep pace with our extruder? Yes, with the twin-coil version, which switches stations without slowing the line.

Can we change coil length between orders? Yes: length is set on the HMI and counted automatically, and coil OD and width are adjustable.

Which standards do you build to? EN 415-10 as the CE packaging-machine reference, with an ISO 12100 risk assessment.

Next step

Email your hose size, coil length and line speed to info@fhopepack.com; we confirm a model and coil layout with the cycle-time match to your line before quoting.

Sources

FCL-V400 data: FHOPE published product description.

Machine demo: hose coiling on YouTube (embedded above).

Coil and cycle figures: worked example, illustrative customer figures.

Standards: EN 415-10; ISO 12100:2010.

Overview Written for extrusion production engineers and packaging buyers, this page explains how the FCL-V400 keeps pace with the line and when a twin-station machine earns its extra station.
