Our standard film is 25 micron, thicker 32–50 micron film also runs, and VCI film is added against rust. A worked example calculates film length and weight per coil.

What the film has to do on a coil

On an eye-through wrapper, the film passes continuously through the coil eye (inside diameter) and around the outside perimeter with every revolution of the rotating ring. To ensure load integrity, the film must cling firmly to itself, elongate smoothly over the sharp inner and outer radial edges, and maintain set tension while driven rollers rotate the coil.

Our vertical wire coil wrapper stands the prestressed steel wire coil on edge in a floor pit, so the coil rolls in at floor level. Driven carrier rollers turn the coil while the orbital ring lays stretch wrap through the eye. On a wire coil the film must bridge the gaps between wire turns and hold where the coil sits on the rollers.

Our hose and pipe coil wrapper works the other way up: a PVC pipe coil lies flat on support rollers and the ring applies film through the eye. A plastic pipe coil is light and soft, so the film needs enough tension to hold the turns together but not so much that it squeezes the coil out of round.

Film type: LLDPE, PE, PVC, HDPE or paper

The FPS-300 wrapper handles PVC, LLDPE, PE, HDPE, and paper. For standard steel wire bundles and industrial coils, linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) stretch film is the primary material due to its high puncture resistance, self-clinging properties, and moisture sealing.

Paper is applied where the coil surface must breathe or where direct polymer-to-metal contact is restricted. On larger dual-dispenser systems such as the FPS-500, two rolls run synchronously—allowing a combined single-pass application of anti-corrosion VCI film beneath protective LLDPE stretch film.

Roll size: it has to fit the ring

The film roll rides on the turning ring and passes through the coil eye, so the roll size is set by the machine, not by the film supplier. On the FPS-300 the roll must match this table.

Film roll item

FPS-300 value

Core ID

50 mm

Roll OD

100–450 mm

Film width

100–150 mm

Materials

PVC, LLDPE, PE, HDPE, paper

Overlap rate

10–90%

Coil range

508–610 mm ID, 600–1,200 mm OD, 100–300 mm wide, 20–1,000 kg

A wider roll covers the coil in fewer turns, but it has to pass through the eye. For coils near the minimum 508 mm ID, confirm roll outer diameter and carriage clearance before ordering wide film.

Thickness

Our standard specification for coil wrapping is 25 µm (micron) film. Machine tensioning systems are also calibrated to handle heavy-gauge film from 32 to 50 µm. Thicker films provide high tear resistance on sharp slit edges, burred wire, and during multimodal transit, though they increase packaging weight per coil.

Engineering recommendation: Deploy standard 25 µm film for baseline operations, increasing gauge to 32–50 µm only when sharp edge punctures or rough handling during transit demand extra puncture strength.

VCI film against rust

Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) film releases active passivating chemicals within the sealed enclosure to arrest oxidation on unpainted steel surfaces. This barrier is essential for export shipping via ocean container or extended storage in humid environments.

The standard configuration applies a primary VCI layer directly against the steel surface, encapsulated by an outer layer of LLDPE stretch film for mechanical clamping and moisture sealing. Dual-dispenser models like the FPS-500 execute this multi-layer wrap in a single automated cycle.

Overlap and layers

Film overlap on the FPS-300 is adjustable from 10% to 90%. At a 50% overlap setting, every point on the coil surface receives two complete layers of film per wrap cycle. Higher overlap ratios (e.g., 60–75%) add containment layers and are recommended for export packing.

Overlap is tightest at the coil ID, where the turns crowd together, and loosest at the OD, so the setting is calculated for the coil OD.

Worked example: film length and weight per coil

The calculation below uses an illustrative coil geometry: 1,200 mm OD, 508 mm ID and 300 mm width, wrapped with 120 mm LLDPE film at 50% overlap. These are illustrative customer figures; the coil fits the FPS-300 (600–1,200 mm OD, 100–300 mm width).

Film path per turn. One complete ring revolution passes through the eye, across the outer perimeter, and over both sidewall faces. The radial wall depth equals:
(1,200 mm − 508 mm) ÷ 2 = 346 mm.
The cross-sectional wrap perimeter per turn is:
2 × 346 mm + 2 × 300 mm = 1,292 mm (approximately 1.29 m).

Number of turns. At 50% overlap, the advance distance per turn at the OD is:
120 mm × 0.5 = 60 mm.
Outer circumference of the coil:
π × 1,200 mm = 3,770 mm.
Required ring revolutions per coil:
3,770 mm ÷ 60 mm = 63 turns.

Film length. Total relaxed film applied to the coil:
63 turns × 1.29 m = 81 m.

Film weight. Standard LLDPE polymer has a density of approximately 920 kg/m³.
At 25 µm (0.000025 m) thickness, 81 m of 120 mm (0.12 m) wide film equals:
0.000025 m × 0.12 m × 81 m = 0.000243 m³.
Net film weight per coil:
0.000243 m³ × 920 kg/m³ = 0.22 kg.
If 50 µm film is selected, the total weight doubles to 0.45 kg.

Stretch factor. The actual film length paid out from the roll is less than 81 m due to mechanical elongation under tension:
Actual roll payout length = 81 ÷ (1 + s),
where s is your stretch ratio. Your film supplier states the stretch the film is rated for, and we set the tension on the machine to suit it.

Selection checklist: what to send us

To verify machine sizing, ring clearance and film compatibility, send us:

Coil dimensions: outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), axial width, and maximum weight (kg).

Coil material and surface condition: bare steel, oiled, painted, or non-ferrous.

Transport profile: domestic flatbed truck, rail, or ocean container freight.

Existing packaging consumables: material type, roll width, core ID, and thickness.

Supplementary barrier requirements: VCI film or paper.

Target throughput requirement: finished coils per hour.

Safety and EN 415-10

For CE compliance, our machines are designed and manufactured in accordance with EN 415-10 (Safety of packaging machines — wrapping machines) and risk assessment standard ISO 12100:2010. Primary machine hazards include the high-speed orbital ring carriage, powered drive rollers, and automated film clamping/cutting units.

Operational safety rules:

Load film rolls only with the ring stopped.

Keep guards and interlocks closed while the ring turns.

Use the emergency stop to clear a film break.

Engineering FAQ

Q: Can we run our existing film inventory on this machine?
A: Yes, provided the roll fits the ring: 50 mm core ID, outer diameter up to 450 mm, and film width between 100 and 150 mm on the FPS-300.

Q: Should we select thicker film to eliminate tearing?
A: Not necessarily. Standard 25 µm film covers most applications. Increase to 32–50 µm only if sharp coil edges tear or the coil travels hard.

Q: Can the wrapper apply stretch film and VCI film simultaneously?
A: Yes. Dual-dispenser systems such as the FPS-500 run two independent rolls, applying an inner VCI layer and an outer LLDPE layer in a single cycle.

Q: What machine safety standards govern the equipment build?
A: We engineer machines to EN 415-10 as the primary European packaging machine standard, with risk assessment under ISO 12100:2010.

Next
