The crane sets the mold on our L-shaped cradle, and the cradle rocks through 90° on its base. Our standard upenders take 5 to 40 tons. A worked example sizes the machine for a 12-ton mold.

Table of Contents

Why a mold needs a 90° turn

Crane handover: the critical step

The machine shown

90° mold upender sizes

Worked example: a 12-ton mold

Floor, base and layout

Selection checklist: what to send us

Safety and EN 415-10

Engineering FAQ

Next step

Related reading

Sources

Why a mold needs a 90° turn

An injection mold runs in the press standing up, with its parting line vertical. To open it for cleaning, polishing or repair, the mold has to lie flat with the parting line horizontal. Then the crane can lift the top half straight up off the bottom half.

After the work, the mold is closed and has to stand up again before it goes back into the press. So most mold shops need the same 90° turn in both directions, several times a week.

Crane handover: the critical step

The crane brings the mold from the press and sets it against the upright face of our cradle. Only when the mold sits square on the cradle does the crane slack off. The cradle then rocks through 90°, and the mold ends up lying on the other face.

This is why the cradle faces have to match the mold. If the mold rests on an edge or a protruding plate, the load is carried at a point and the mold can shift during the turn. We size the cradle faces to the mold and add stops or clamps where needed.

The machine shown

Our 90° upender, with a yellow cradle marked 15T, stands on a base guarded by a red and white striped enclosure. The crane lowers a large steel mold against the cradle’s upright face, and the cradle rocks over to lay the mold down. A worker in a hairnet and work clothes watches from outside the base, in a clean mold room with shelving and blue storage boxes behind.

90° mold upender sizes

Model

Max load

Table L × W × H

Control

FPMT-5

5 t

3,200 × 2,200 × 520 mm

manual and remote

FPMT-10

10 t

3,000 × 2,000 × 500 mm

manual

FPMT-20

20 t

3,500 × 2,500 × 550 mm

manual or PLC

FPMT-40

40 t

4,000 × 3,000 × 600 mm

manual

All of these turn through 90°. The table is sized to the mold rather than to the load class, which is why the 5-ton table above is larger than the 10-ton one. The 5-ton model runs on 220 V or 380 V. Motor power, hydraulic oil volume and machine weight are confirmed at quote for your design. Between the standard sizes, such as the 15-ton unit shown, we build the cradle to your mold.

Worked example: a 12-ton mold

A plant runs a 12-ton mold, 2,200 mm long, 1,600 mm wide and 1,400 mm thick between the clamping plates. These are illustrative customer figures.

Capacity. We design our drives with a 20% allowance, and we size the mold the same way: 12 × 1.2 = 14.4 t. That is over the 10-ton model, so the right choice is a 15-ton cradle like the one shown, or the 20-ton FPMT-20.

Table size. Lying flat, the mold covers 2,200 × 1,600 mm. The FPMT-20 table is 3,500 × 2,500 mm, leaving 650 mm each side lengthwise and 450 mm across for slings and tools.

Lift height after opening. With the mold flat, the top half has to clear the guide pins before the crane can swing it away. Hook height needed = table height + mold thickness + pin length + sling height. With the FPMT-20 table at 550 mm, that is 550 + 1,400 + pin length + sling height.

Turns per shift. n = T_shift ÷ (t_crane_in + t90 + t_crane_out), where t90 is one turn and the crane times are yours. The turn time t90 depends on mold weight, and we state it in our quotation.

Floor, base and layout

The upender stands on a flat floor or on a base like the one shown. Plan crane access to both faces of the cradle: the upright face for setting the mold down, and the flat face for lifting off the top half. Keep a clear walkway round the guarded base.

Selection checklist: what to send us

Heaviest mold weight.

Mold length, width and thickness.

Guide pin length and any protruding plates or hoses.

Crane capacity and hook height.

Turns per shift.

Supply voltage and control preference.

Safety and EN 415-10

Our CE reference is EN 415-10, and every machine gets an ISO 12100 risk assessment. The hazards that matter most here are the turning cradle, the mold on it and the crane load during handover.

The upender carries overload protection, emergency stop buttons and mechanical locks. Turn the cradle only with the crane hook clear, and keep everyone outside the guarded base while it moves.

Engineering FAQ

Q: Can the same machine stand the mold back up?
A: Yes. The cradle turns in both directions, flat to upright and upright to flat.

Q: Do we still need a crane?
A: Yes, to set the mold on and lift it off. The upender replaces turning the mold on the hook.

Q: What if our mold is between standard sizes?
A: We build the cradle to your mold, as with the 15-ton unit shown.

Q: Which standards do you build to?
A: We follow EN 415-10 for CE markets and assess the risks to ISO 12100.

Next step

Email your heaviest mold weight, size and crane data to info@fhopepack.com.

We reply within 24 hours with a proposal, with the model and cradle design.

We send a layout drawing for your mold room.

Related reading

Mold upenders

90 degree mold upender 20T

Volteadora de moldes de 180 grados

Industrial mold tipper and upender

Mold flipper table

Sources

Specifications: FHOPE 90° mold upender pages (5T, 10T, 20T, 40T)

Machine video: 90° mold upender on YouTube

Capacity, fit and hook height: our worked example, illustrative mold figures

Standards: EN 415-10 (packaging machines, general safety); ISO 12100:2010

Last reviewed: 2026-10-17

Executive summary A volteadora de moldes de 90 grados, a 90-degree mold upender, turns a mold from standing as it runs in the press to lying flat, so the mold halves can be lifted apart.
