Our steel wire coil compressing machine with moving clamp presses the coil down on its basket with a hydraulic press and holds it while the straps go on, then the coil tilts down and a moving clamp takes it out. Our larger wire rod compactor applies 60–400 kN in a 30–40 second cycle. A loose coil takes more space, shifts in transport and can spring open when handled. Pressed down and strapped, it becomes a dense, stable package that stacks and ships safely.

Compacting first also makes any wrapping that follows tighter, because the film goes on a firm coil instead of a soft one.

How the compactor works

The coil arrives on its basket, centred on the line, and a conveyor moves it to the compacting position. A hydraulic press comes down and presses the coil to the set height. The press supports that touch the wire are faced with HDPE so they do not mark it.

While the press holds the coil, the straps go on at the strapping positions. Then the press lifts, the coil tilts to horizontal and the clamp carriage takes it out. Soft start and stop, multiple limit switches and an automatic stop keep the motion controlled. Two-way back pressure in the hydraulics keeps the press smooth as the load shifts.

The compactor

The compactor has two tall columns and a press that comes down inside a cage of vertical rods around a galvanised wire coil. With the coil held compressed, the operator straps it by hand at the strapping position. The strapped coil then tilts 90° to horizontal, and a clamp carriage on the side rail draws it off along the discharge track.

Compactor data

Item

Wire coil compactor (basket)

Wire rod compactor

Compaction drive

hydraulic, automatic

hydraulic, 210 bar

Max. compacting force

10–20 t, set to the coil

adjustable 60–400 kN

Typical compacted height

around 800 mm

to the coil

Strapping

by hand after compacting, or automatic PET or steel strap

4 binding wires, 4 strapping heads

Baskets

your existing baskets can work

—

Coil OD

to your coil

1,000–1,800 mm

Coil weight

to your coil

500–2,000 kg

Cycle time

depends on strapping

30–40 s

Air supply

—

5.0–6.0 bar

Additional manufacturer ratings for heavy wire rod systems: The wire rod compactor features a press stand opening size of 650–4700 mm, an overall horizontal C-hook length of 3500 mm, a total installed power of 150 kW, and dual compacting stations capable of forces up to 50 t [manufacturer rating]. Automated binding wire heads utilize 6.3–8 mm diameter wire with 380–450 MPa tensile strength and 28%–32% elongation [manufacturer rating].

The basket compactor suits wire coils on baskets with hand strapping. The wire rod compactor is our heavy, fully automatic machine for hot-rolled rod coils.

Worked example: compaction and stack height

A plant packs galvanised wire coils that stand 1,100 mm high loose and weigh 800 kg. It ships them in 40 ft high-cube containers with an internal height of about 2,690 mm. These are illustrative customer figures.

Loose. Two coils stack to 2 × 1,100 = 2,200 mm. A third would need 3,300 mm, so each floor position takes two coils.

Compacted. Our compactor normally brings a coil to around 800 mm. Three coils then stack to 3 × 800 = 2,400 mm. That fits the 2,690 mm, so each floor position takes three coils, 50% more per position.

Weight check. Three coils weigh 3 × 800 = 2,400 kg per stack. Before loading this way, check your container payload and floor load.

General rule. Compaction ratio = (H_loose − H_compacted) ÷ H_loose. Here (1,100 − 800) ÷ 1,100 = 27%. The height you can reach depends on the wire and its spring-back, so we test it on your coils.

From compacting to wrapping

The compactor can be one station of a full wire coil line. After strapping, coils can be wrapped in stretch film or PVC, labelled, weighed and stacked. The film protects the coil against rust, water spots and dust in transport and storage.

In an automated packaging line, coils on carriers or spools transfer directly onto the compacting station, lower into position, undergo compression and strapping, and advance to the downstream wrapping conveyor, engineered for a baseline throughput of 8 coils/hour including carrier handling using 19 mm smooth polyester strapping [manufacturer rating].

Selection checklist: what to send us

Wire diameter and material.

Coil OD, ID, loose height and weight.

Basket or no basket.

Strap type: PET, steel or wire, manual or automatic.

Coils per hour.

Next steps: wrapping, weighing, labelling, stacking.

Safety and EN 415-10

For CE markets we use EN 415-10 as our reference, with a risk assessment to ISO 12100. The main hazards are the descending press, the moving clamp and the stored energy in a compressed coil.

Strap only with the press holding the coil. Release the press only when every strap is closed, because a compressed coil springs back if a strap fails. While the operator is at the strapping position, the tilt and the clamp carriage must be interlocked so they cannot move.

Engineering FAQ

Q: Can we strap by hand on this machine?
A: Yes. The compactor has a position for manual strapping. We can also add automatic PET or steel strapping.

Q: Will the press mark the wire?
A: The press supports that touch the coil are faced with HDPE to protect the wire.

Q: How fast is the cycle?
A: Our wire rod compactor runs 30–40 seconds. For the basket type, the cycle depends on strapping by hand or machine.

Q: Can we keep our existing baskets?
A: Usually yes. Our semi-automatic compactor works with existing baskets, and we check them against your coil.

Q: Which standards do you build to?
A: EN 415-10 as our CE reference, with an ISO 12100 risk assessment.

Next step

Email your coil size, weight and strap type to info@fhopepack.com.

We reply within 24 hours with a proposal, with the compactor and line layout.

We send a compaction test plan for your coils.

Related reading

Wire coil compacting and strapping machine

Wire rod compactor

How to do steel wire compacting and strapping automatically

Automatic wire rod compacting and strapping machine

Steel wire coil compressing and rack take off machine

Sources

Specifications: FHOPE wire coil compacting and strapping machine and wire rod compactor pages

Machine video: steel wire coil compressing and strapping on YouTube

Compaction and stack height: our worked example, illustrative coil figures

Standards: EN 415-10 (packaging machines, general safety); ISO 12100:2010

Wire coil compacting and strapping machine – Wire coil compactor (product): https://www.fhopepack.com/wire-line/Wire-coil-compactor-strapping_machine.html

Wire rod compactor with steel wire strapping machine (product): https://www.fhopepack.com/Steel-wire-strapping-machine/wire-rod-compactor.html

Automatic Wire coil compressing and strapping machine packing line (product): https://www.fhopepack.com/wire-line/Automatic-Wire-coil-compressing-packing-line.html

Last reviewed: 2026-10-17

Executive summary Before a steel wire coil is wrapped or shipped, it is compressed and strapped so it stays tight.
