It covers each pack with paper, straps it with polypropylene (PP) strap at about 15 s per strap, places timber bearers and stacks the packs for dispatch. The base strapper takes packs up to 1,300 mm wide and 1,800 mm high, with 50 to 5,000 N of adjustable strap tension.

Table of Contents

Why sheet packs need a line, not a strapper alone

Stations on the line

Strapping machine specifications

Worked example: strap spacing and strapping time per pack

PP strap or PET strap for sheet

Selection checklist: what to send us

Safety and EN 415-10

Engineering FAQ

Next step

Related reading

Sources

Why sheet packs need a line, not a strapper alone

A cut-to-length line turns out sheet packs one after another, and each pack has to be protected, strapped and stacked before the next one arrives. Steel and aluminium sheet faces mark easily, and aluminium scratches if a strap bears straight on it. Packs are also long and heavy, so moving them by crane between separate machines slows the whole cut-to-length line.

A line joins the steps with driven conveyors. The pack stays flat on rollers or chains from cover to stack, and no one has to lift it between stations.

Stations on the line

Infeed. Roller conveyors take the sheet pack from the cut-to-length line and stop it at the covering station.

Paper covering. An overhead unit with a paper roll and press rollers lays kraft paper over the pack to keep moisture and dirt off the sheet face.

PP strapping. At the strapping station a gantry beam comes down and presses the pack, and the strapping head applies PP strap around it. Crosswise straps go on at a separate cross-strapping station further down the line, so the pack is strapped both ways without being turned.

Timber placing. An automatic device places squared timbers of different lengths as bearers, so forks and slings can get under each pack and timber length follows pack width.

Stacking and outfeed. Gripper units stack the strapped packs, and chain conveyors carry the finished stack out.

Fencing with interlocked doors surrounds the stacking area, and the conveyors run between the stations without an operator.

Strapping machine specifications

These are the published values for the vertical strapping machine the line is built on. For sheet, the frame, conveyor and press beam are made to suit the pack.

Item

Value

Maximum package height / width

1,800 / 1,300 mm

Conveyor height

300 to 600 mm, adjustable

Strap widths

12 to 16 mm or 19 mm

Seal

friction weld, 20 mm seal length

Tension

50 to 5,000 N, adjustable

Strap feed / retract speed

up to 3.6 m/s

Single strap cycle

about 15 s

Strap reel core

406 mm

Edge protectors (option)

50, 120 or 200 mm

Power

380 V 50 Hz, 3 kW

Controls

Siemens PLC, VFD and touch screen; SEW motor; Omron and Sick sensors

Worked example: strap spacing and strapping time per pack

For evenly spaced straps, we work out the spacing as the pack length divided by the number of straps minus one, and adjust it on site. The strapping time is the number of straps times about 15 s. The pack length below is illustrative.

Pack length 3,000 mm

3 straps

4 straps

5 straps

Spacing, 3,000 ÷ (n − 1)

1,500 mm

1,000 mm

750 mm

Strapping time, n × 15 s

45 s

60 s

75 s

Strapper limit, 3,600 ÷ time

80 packs/h

60 packs/h

48 packs/h

Thin aluminium sags between straps, so it usually needs the closer spacing; thick steel plate holds its shape with fewer. These limits exclude conveyor indexing and settling time between strap positions, which add to every pack, so check it against the rate of the cut-to-length line before you fix the strap count.

PP strap or PET strap for sheet

PP strap is light and low in cost, and it suits most covered sheet packs that travel by truck. PET holds its tension better over time, which matters for heavy packs and long sea freight. Both run on the same strapping head within its 12 to 16 mm and 19 mm widths, with tension set from 50 to 5,000 N.

On aluminium or prepainted sheet, set the tension low enough that the strap does not bite the edge, and add edge protectors at the corners. The optional edge protector unit puts on 50, 120 or 200 mm protectors automatically.

Selection checklist: what to send us

Sheet length, width and thickness, and the heaviest pack.

Steel, aluminium or prepainted, and whether the face needs paper or film.

Straps per pack, lengthwise and crosswise.

PP or PET strap.

Packs per hour from your cut-to-length line.

Timber size and how many packs go in one stack.

Safety and EN 415-10

For CE markets, ISO 12100 sets the risk-assessment method and EN 415-10 sets the general safety requirements for packaging machines. On this line the hazards are the press beam coming down, the strap path, the timber placer and the stacking grippers.

Fixed fencing with interlocked doors should keep people out of the strapping and stacking zones while the line runs. Clear a strap jam or change a reel only with the line stopped and isolated.

Engineering FAQ

Q: How big a sheet pack does the strapper take?
A: The base machine takes packs up to 1,300 mm wide and 1,800 mm high; for longer or wider sheet we build the frame to suit.

Q: How long does one strap take?
A: About 15 s, so a 4-strap pack takes about 60 s.

Q: How is the strap sealed?
A: By friction weld, with a 20 mm seal.

Q: Can it run PET instead of PP?
A: Yes, in 12 to 16 mm or 19 mm widths, with tension from 50 to 5,000 N.

Q: Which safety standards apply?
A: For CE markets, ISO 12100 and EN 415-10.

Next step

Email your sheet sizes, pack weights and packs per hour to info@fhopepack.com.

We reply within 24 hours with a proposal naming the stations and strap type.

We send a layout drawing from your cut-to-length line to the stacking end.

Related reading

Vertical pallet strapping machine

Horizontal pallet strapping machine

Automatic strapping machines

Steel sheet upender

Steel sheet packing line

Steel sheet bundle strap packing line

Sources

Specifications: FHOPE vertical pallet strapping machine product page

Line build: FHOPE engineering confirmation, automatic line built on our strapping machine

Strap spacing: FHOPE engineering confirmation, spacing = length ÷ (straps − 1)

Machine video: steel and aluminium sheet packing line on YouTube

Strapping time per pack: our worked example, illustrative pack length

Standards: EN 415-10 (packaging machines, general safety); ISO 12100:2010

Last reviewed: 2026-10-17

Executive summary We built this automatic line for steel and aluminium sheet around our vertical strapping machine, customised for the sheet pack.
