A motorised trolley carries the coil in and out, so the operator does not lift it. The FPW-500 takes coils up to 1,500 kg and the FPW-800 up to 3,000 kg. A worked example shows why the coil bore always gets more overlap than the outside.

Table of Contents

Why steel wire coils are wrapped through the eye

How our trolley-loaded wire coil wrapper works

FPW-500 and FPW-800 specifications

Worked example: ring passes and overlap at the bore

Choosing the packing material

Trolley type or inline conveyor type

Selection checklist: what to send us

Safety and EN 415-10

Engineering FAQ

Next step

Related reading

Sources

Why steel wire coils are wrapped through the eye

Drawn steel wire, PC wire and spring wire rust quickly once moisture reaches the turns. A coil that only has straps or an outer cover stays open at the bore and the faces. Sea freight makes this worse, because the coil sits for weeks in damp air.

Eye-through wrapping closes the coil completely. Each pass of the film goes through the bore, over one face, round the outside and back over the other face. As the coil turns, the passes build into a full cover over every surface.

How our trolley-loaded wire coil wrapper works

The coil stands on its edge in a cradle of supporting rollers mounted on a motorised trolley. The trolley runs the coil into the wrapping position, centred on the ring, and takes it out again after wrapping.

Wrapping ring. A ring carrying the film roll turns through the coil bore, laying film over the bore, both faces and the outside on every turn.

Coil rotation. Polyurethane-covered rollers turn the coil slowly, so each film pass lands beside the last one.

Main board height. A geared motor raises or lowers the main board to centre coils of different diameters on the ring.

Mechanical hand. In automatic mode it feeds the film at the start and cuts it at the end, so no one reaches into the ring. The FPW-800 also offers a semi-automatic mode for plants that want the operator to start and finish each wrap.

Controls. A Siemens PLC and HMI run the cycle. Overlap and film tension are set on the panel.

Strap the coil before it reaches the wrapper. Our wire coiling and strapping machines strap each coil through the eye at 2–4 places, which holds the turns while the coil rolls on the cradle. The PU-coated contact points keep the wire surface free of scratches. An antiskid mould structure holds the coil steady while the ring turns.

FPW-500 and FPW-800 specifications

Item

FPW-500

FPW-800

Coil ID

300–700 mm

over 500 mm

Coil OD

700–1,300 mm

800–1,400 mm

Coil width

50–500 mm

300–800 mm

Coil weight

40–1,500 kg

200–3,000 kg

Overlap

10%–90%, adjustable

10%–90%, adjustable

Film roll

ID 50 mm, OD 100–450 mm, width 100–120 mm

ID 50 mm, OD 100–250 mm, width 100–300 mm

Materials

PVC, LDPE, LLDPE, paper, HDPE

PVC, LLDPE, PE, paper, HDPE

Power

3.5 kW

3.4 kW

Supply

380 V, 50 Hz, 3 phase

380 V, 50 Hz, 3 phase

Air supply

4–6 kgf/cm²

4–6 kgf/cm², confirmed per order

The FPW-800 runs in fully automatic or semi-automatic mode and is built for pre-stranded and PC wire coils. Its ring centre height is adjustable.

Worked example: ring passes and overlap at the bore

Take a coil of 1,200 mm OD, 500 mm ID and 400 mm width. That sits inside the FPW-500 range. Your own coil figures go in the same way.

Passes for the outside. Use 100 mm film at 50% overlap measured on the OD. Each pass then advances 100 × (1 − 0.5) = 50 mm round the outside.

OD circumference: π × 1,200 = 3,770 mm

Ring passes: 3,770 ÷ 50 = 75.4, so 76 passes

Overlap at the bore. The same 76 passes must fit round a much smaller circle inside. The advance there is 50 × 500 ÷ 1,200 = 20.8 mm per pass. The overlap at the bore is 1 − 20.8 ÷ 100 = 79%.

So the bore always carries more layers than the outside. Set overlap for the OD you need, and the bore takes care of itself. Raising OD overlap to 70% would push the bore near 88% and waste film there.

Film per pass. One pass follows the coil section: 2 × (400 + 350) = 1,500 mm, where 350 mm is (OD − ID) ÷ 2. Seventy-six passes use about 114 m of film before stretch.

Cycle time. Wrapping time = passes ÷ ring speed in r/min. We confirm the ring speed for your coil and film when we quote.

Choosing the packing material

Stretch film and PE film give a clear, moisture-tight cover. Crepe paper, compound paper and non-woven fabric let the coil breathe and suit oiled wire. Woven belts and HDPE tape add tear strength for rough handling. Many wire plants wrap paper first and film second for export coils.

Trolley type or inline conveyor type

Our FPW-500 and FPW-800 load by trolley and suit a packing station fed by crane or forklift. Wire drawing lines that need hands-off flow can use our FPW-AU300 automatic steel wire coil packing machine. It has in and out roller conveyors and takes 300–1,500 kg coils.

Selection checklist: what to send us

Coil ID, OD and width, smallest and largest.

Heaviest coil weight.

Wire grade and whether it is oiled.

Packing material, single layer or paper plus film.

Coils per shift.

How coils arrive: crane, forklift or conveyor.

Power and compressed air at site.

Safety and EN 415-10

We design the wrapper to EN 415-10 for packaging machines and assess risks to ISO 12100. The turning ring and the trolley are the main hazards. Mesh guarding encloses the ring head, and the mechanical hand keeps hands out of the film path. We add perimeter fencing with interlocked access gates to suit your floor layout. Emergency stops sit on the control panel.

Engineering FAQ

Q: Why does the bore get more overlap than the outside?
A: Every pass goes through the bore, and the bore circle is smaller. The same passes crowd closer together there.

Q: Can one machine wrap several coil sizes?
A: Yes, within the model range. The main board height and roller spacing are adjusted for each size.

Q: Will the rollers mark the wire?
A: The contact rollers are PU-covered to protect the wire surface.

Q: Which safety standards apply?
A: ISO 12100 for the risk assessment and EN 415-10 for the machine, in CE markets.

Next step

Email your coil sizes, weights and coils per shift to info@fhopepack.com.

We reply within 24 hours with a proposal naming the model and material.

We send a layout drawing for the trolley path and crane access.

Related reading

FPW-500 wire coil wrapping machine

FPW-800 steel wire wrapping machine

How to choose the coil wrapping machine per your steel wire coil

How to choose packing material combination for steel wire packing

Wire coil wrapping machine for wire packing with paper

Steel wire coil wrapping machine and packing machine

How to pack steel wire for sea shipping

Sources

Specifications: FHOPE FPW-500, FPW-800 and FPW-AU300 product pages

Machine video: steel wire coil wrapping on YouTube

Overlap and film use: our worked example, illustrative coil figures

Standards: EN 415-10 (packaging machines, general safety); ISO 12100:2010

Last reviewed: 2026-10-17

Executive summary Our FPW wire coil wrapping machine seals a steel wire coil in film or paper by passing a turning ring through the coil eye while the coil rolls on its supports.
