Coils come out loose, oval or with crossed turns, and the length per coil varies. An automatic coiler winds each coil to the same length and shape, so coils stack, weigh and sell the same every time.

The strapping holds that shape. A coil strapped on the machine, still under winding tension, keeps its turns tight through handling.

Our vertical pipe coiler inside its guard

The coiler is a white frame with a vertical winding disc. Pipe comes in from the line through a set of white guide rollers and onto the rotating former, which has four arms to hold the coil.

When the coil is full, clamping and positioning units under it close in on the coil core. A beam with two parallel press bars then comes down on top to steady the coil for strapping. Aluminium-frame mesh doors with locks enclose the reel and clamp area.

The winding and strapping cycle

Measure. A meter counter checks the pipe length as it enters.

Wind. The servo-driven former winds the pipe in even layers.

Cut. At the set length the pipe is cut.

Hold. The clamps and press bars close on the full coil.

Strap. The coil is strapped at the set points.

Release. The coil is released and taken off; the former is ready for the next.

FCL-800 series data

From our FCL-800 automatic plastic pipe coiler and strapping machine page:

Item

FCL-800A

FCL-800B

FCL-800C

Tube OD

5–16 mm

10–20 mm

15–30 mm

Coil OD

500–800 mm

500–800 mm

500–800 mm

Coil ID

200–300 mm

250–500 mm

300–600 mm

Coil height

80–200 mm

100–300 mm

100–300 mm

Coil length range (meter counter)

10–50 m

20–100 m

20–200 m

Air supply

6 bar

6 bar

6 bar

Coiling speed is up to 80 m/min, with PLC and HMI control, servo drives for winding and strapping, IoT monitoring with error codes, and a strapping success rate up to 99%. At the 80 m/min maximum, winding 100 m takes 100 ÷ 80 × 60 = 75 s. On a slower line the coiler runs at line speed, so the winding time is the length divided by the line speed.

Matching the coiler to the extruder

In line, the coiler is servo-controlled so its winding speed matches the extruding speed; the pipe is neither pulled nor allowed to pile up. Tell us whether the coiler connects to an extruder or to a pay-off, and the line speed, and we set the drive and the length counter to suit.

The line keeps running while the coiler cuts, holds and straps a coil. Where that pause is longer than the line can wait, we supply an accumulator ahead of the coiler, quoted together with the coiling and strapping machines.

Selection checklist

Pipe type and OD.

Length per coil.

Coil ID, OD and height wanted.

Line speed, and extruder or pay-off feed.

Straps per coil, and strapping material and size. For PP strap we commonly use 10 × 0.8 mm or 15 × 0.6 mm.

Film or shrink wrap after strapping.

Safety: EN 415-10 and ISO 12100

We design the coiler to EN 415-10 and assess its risks to ISO 12100. The rotating former, the clamping units, the press bars and the cutter are the hazards. The mesh doors enclose them and are interlocked, so opening a door stops the former and the strapping. Coil removal is done with the former stopped. Guards and CE documents are agreed per project.

Engineering FAQ

Q: How is the coil length controlled?
A: A meter counter measures the pipe as it enters, and the cutter works at the set length.

Q: What holds the coil during strapping?
A: Clamps close on the coil core from below, and press bars hold it from above.

Q: Can it run in line with the extruder?
A: Yes. The servo drive matches the coiling speed to the extruding speed.

Q: Which standard applies?
A: EN 415-10, with ISO 12100 for the risk assessment.

Next step

Send pipe OD, coil length and line speed to info@fhopepack.com.

We choose the FCL-800 model and coil size.

We reply within 24 hours with a layout and quotation.

Related reading

FCL-800 automatic pipe coiler and strapping machine (product)

Double wall hose coiling and strapping machine

Automatic hose coiler with strapping machine

Testing for checking the time of the 3 straps per coil

Sources

FHOPE FCL-800 automatic pipe coiler and strapping machine product page

FHOPE project notes on matching coiler and extruder speed

Our pipe coiler shown above

Worked example: illustrative figures

Standards: EN 415-10; ISO 12100:2010

Last reviewed: 2026-10-18

Executive summary An automatic pipe winding and strapping machine coiler takes pipe straight from the line, measures the length, winds it into a tight coil, cuts it and straps it, with no hand winding.
