Ours is a C-type inverter: a forklift sets the stack in the C, a hydraulic holder presses it from the top, and a geared motor turns the C through 180°. Our quoted C-type unit takes 4 t and loads of 1,000–4,000 mm length. The bottom sheet, where marks and edge damage often hide, cannot be seen without turning the whole stack. Turning by crane means slinging a loose stack and flipping it in the air, which is slow and can let sheets slide.

An inverter turns the stack in a frame, clamped, on the floor. It is also used to swap a damaged pallet or skid, or to present the other face to the next process.

C-type steel sheet inverter construction

The machine has a blue base and a large yellow C-shaped turning frame on a horizontal axis. Inside the C are the lower table and an upper holder, with hydraulic hoses running to the cylinders. The C opens to one side, so a forklift can set the stack in and take it out. The operator controls it from a panel or remote, standing clear of the frame.

The 180° turn, step by step

Load. The forklift sets the stack on the lower table of the C.

Clamp. The hydraulic holder comes down onto the top of the stack. The pressing force is adjustable.

Turn. The geared motor turns the C at a fixed speed through 180°, with smooth, vibration-free motion.

Stop. Mechanical and electrical stop blocks end the turn at 180°.

Release. The holder, now underneath, carries the stack. The clamp opens and the forklift takes the stack out.

The forks need a way in on both sides of the turn. The lower table has fork gaps for loading. For unloading after the turn, the stack sits on bearers or a skid, or the holder is given fork gaps too. We agree which at quote.

The turn time is t = 180° ÷ ω, where ω is the fixed turning speed in degrees per second; we confirm it at quote for the load.

If power is lost, the position locks automatically and resets softly when power returns.

C-type sheet inverter data

From our quotation for a C-type steel sheet inverter for 180° turning:

Item

Value

Max. load

4 t

Load size

L 1,000–4,000 × W 800–1,500 × H 80–400 mm

Drive

3.0 kW turning gear motor + 2.2 kW hydraulic unit (5.2 kW)

Loading

forklift

Clamping

hydraulic top press-down holder, adjustable force

Clamp opening

set by hand to the stack height; the cylinder stroke then does the clamping

Footprint and height (L × W × H)

about 3,000 × 2,200 × 2,200 mm

Weight of the machine

about 2.5 t

Safety

E-stop, sensors, guards, stop blocks, power-loss position lock

The cylinders are double acting, the hydraulic system works up to 18 MPa, and the lower table has fork gaps for loading. Placing it centred in the C matters: every 50 mm off-centre adds about 1.8 kN·m that the drive has to hold through the turn. For stacks near the limit, or longer than 4,000 mm, we size a heavier frame.

Shipping and installation

For larger inverters we make the turning structure in two parts so the machine fits in a 40 ft high-cube container. On site, the two parts are joined and locked, the power is connected and the machine is ready to run.

Selection checklist

Stack length, width, height and weight.

Sheet thickness and surface finish.

Loading: forklift, crane or conveyor.

Turns per hour.

Space and floor at the site.

Voltage and control: panel or remote.

Safety: EN 415-10 and ISO 12100

We design the inverter to EN 415-10 and assess its risks to ISO 12100. The turning C, the clamp and the load are the hazards. The operator works from the panel or remote, outside the swing of the C. Stop blocks, sensors and the power-loss lock keep the frame from moving unexpectedly. Guards and CE documents are agreed per project, from either party, to suit local law.

Engineering FAQ

Q: What stops sheets sliding during the turn?
A: The hydraulic holder presses the stack from the top through the whole turn, with the force set to the load.

Q: What happens on a power failure?
A: The position locks automatically, and resets softly when power returns.

Q: Can it take a crane load instead of a forklift?
A: The standard C is forklift-loaded; other loading is designed per project.

Q: Which standard applies?
A: EN 415-10 for the machine, with ISO 12100 for the risk assessment.

Next step

Send stack sizes and weights to info@fhopepack.com.

We size the C frame and drive.

We reply within 24 hours with a drawing and quotation.

Related reading

Load inverter (product)

Mechanical inverter 180° and rotator

Steel sheet pallet inverter

Steel sheet upender for 180° safety turning

Sources

FHOPE C-type steel sheet inverter quotation (technical data)

FHOPE project notes on two-part shipping and installation

Our sheet inverter shown above

Worked example: illustrative figures; steel density 7,850 kg/m³

Standards: EN 415-10; ISO 12100:2010

Last reviewed: 2026-10-18

Executive summary A steel sheet inverter and turning machine turns a stack of steel sheet upside down, so the underside can be checked or the stack set down the other way up.
