It clamps the stack between two platens with the new pallet on top, turns it over and sets it down on that pallet. The FPFZ-1 handles stacks up to 1.2 t and 2,000 mm high. With steel sheet, weight runs out long before height does, as the worked example shows.

Table of Contents

Why steel sheet stacks need a pallet change

How we change the pallet in one turn

FPFZ-1 and ground-level options

Worked example: how many sheets fit the 1.2 t limit

Clamping slippery sheet stacks

Selection checklist: what to send us

Safety and EN 415-10

Engineering FAQ

Next step

Related reading

Sources

Why steel sheet stacks need a pallet change

Cut steel sheet often leaves the shear on a plant pallet or a heavy wooden skid. That pallet may be the wrong size, the wrong wood for export, or too valuable to ship away. Moving sheets one by one to a new pallet takes two people, scratches the surfaces and risks cut hands on sheet edges.

A pallet change keeps the stack together. The whole stack moves from one pallet to another in a single turn. You keep your plant pallets in house and ship on the pallet your customer or route requires.

How we change the pallet in one turn

Load. A forklift sets the sheet stack on its pallet onto the lower platen.

New pallet. A replacement pallet or a timber frame goes on top of the stack. An operator squares it to the sheet edges.

Clamp. The upper platen lowers and presses the stack between the two pallets. The pressing device is adjusted to the stack size.

Turn. The machine turns the clamped stack through 180°. The new pallet is now underneath.

Release. The platen opens and the forklift takes the stack away on its new pallet. The old pallet now sits on top and comes off for reuse.

The same turn also brings the bottom sheet to the top. That lets you inspect the underside of a stack or reach the bottom sheet first.

FPFZ-1 and ground-level options

Item

FPFZ-1 180° pallet inverter

Ground-level C series

Load size

L 1,200 mm × W 1,100–1,200 mm × H 1,200–2,000 mm

up to 2,000 mm high

Capacity

max. 1.2 t

max. 1,500 kg

Turnover angle

180°

180°

Turnover time

about 50 s

—

Loading

forklift

pallet jack, lower platen at floor level

Operation

wireless remote control

buttons, inverter or PLC speed control

Motor

about 2.2 kW

—

Supply

380 V, 50 Hz, three phase

—

The FPFZ-1 has adjustable turning speed, automatic start and stop, and mechanical and electric stop blocks. The ground-level C series suits plants without a forklift at the changing station.

Worked example: how many sheets fit the 1.2 t limit

Take 1,200 × 1,000 mm steel sheets, 1 mm thick, on a 1,200 × 1,000 mm pallet. These are illustrative customer figures. Steel weighs about 7,850 kg/m³, a standard material value.

One sheet: 1.2 m × 1.0 m × 0.001 m × 7,850 = 9.42 kg

Sheets in 1.2 t: 1,200 ÷ 9.42 = 127 sheets

Stack height of steel: 127 × 1 mm = 127 mm

So a full 1.2 t load of this sheet is only about 127 mm of steel. Weight is the limit to check, not height.

That short stack also sits below the 1,200 mm minimum load height of the FPFZ-1. Add both pallets or timber frames to the stack height, and compare the total with that minimum. If it is still short, we confirm a spacer frame or a shorter clamp design for your order.

For 3 mm sheet the same weight is about 42 sheets. Send us sheet size, thickness and sheets per stack, and we check both weight and clamp stroke.

Clamping slippery sheet stacks

Oiled or coated steel sheets slide on each other. When the stack turns past the vertical, every sheet wants to slip. The clamp has to press the stack firmly enough for friction to hold it through the whole turn.

We adjust the pressing device to the stack size, so the full stack face carries the clamp. The pressure on the top sheet is the clamp force divided by the contact area. A narrow contact point concentrates force and can dent thin sheet, so a full-face frame spreads it. Timber frames or flat pallets on both faces spread the load and protect the sheet surfaces. Edge-protected strapping before the turn gives a second hold for tall stacks of thin sheet.

Selection checklist: what to send us

Sheet length, width and thickness.

Sheets per stack and stack weight.

Pallet sizes, old and new.

Whether the sheets are oiled, coated or film-protected.

Stacks to change per shift.

Forklift or pallet jack at the station.

Power supply at site.

Safety and EN 415-10

We design the inverter to EN 415-10 for packaging machines and assess risks to ISO 12100. The clamp and the turning body are the main hazards. Fencing with mesh panels encloses the turning area, and the forklift opening is the only way in. Mechanical and electric stop blocks hold the body at its end positions. The wireless remote lets the operator stand outside the fence while the stack turns.

Engineering FAQ

Q: Will the sheets slip during the turn?
A: Not with the clamp set for the stack. Oiled sheet may need frames on both faces or straps.

Q: Can it turn stacks heavier than 1.2 t?
A: The FPFZ-1 is rated 1.2 t. For heavier sheet stacks we quote a larger frame.

Q: Can it change pallets of other goods too?
A: Yes. It turns cartons, bags and drums the same way.

Q: Which safety standards apply?
A: ISO 12100 for the risk assessment and EN 415-10 for the machine, in CE markets.

Next step

Email your sheet sizes, stack weights and pallet sizes to info@fhopepack.com.

We reply within 24 hours with a proposal naming the model and clamp.

We send a layout drawing with fencing and forklift access.

Related reading

180° pallet inverter and pallet exchanger

Ground level pallet inverter

Steel sheet 180-degree turning and upending process

Steel sheet pallet inverter

C-type 180 degree pallet turnover and pallet inverter

Mobile pallet inverter for mold and steel sheets

Sources

Specifications: FHOPE 180° pallet inverter and ground-level pallet inverter product pages

Machine video: steel sheet pallet changing on YouTube

Sheet count: our worked example, illustrative sheet figures; steel density 7,850 kg/m³

Standards: EN 415-10 (packaging machines, general safety); ISO 12100:2010

Last reviewed: 2026-10-17

Executive summary Our 180° pallet inverter swaps the pallet under a stack of steel sheets without lifting a sheet by hand.
