Silver guide rollers hold the tyre upright, and a small control box with red and green buttons sits on the right.

0 to about 4 s. The machine is at rest. A black tyre stands on its rollers with the ring through its eye, and a roll of red packing material sits on the ring.

About 5 to 7 s. An operator’s hand presses a button on the control box. The tyre starts to turn and the red material starts to wind onto the tyre.

About 8 to 15 s. The ring runs at speed and lays the red belt in a tight spiral around the section of the tyre. At about 12 s the operator’s hand briefly adjusts the material, then leaves.

About 15 s. The red belt covers the tyre all the way round.

Cycle time on the clip

Step on the clip

Time window

Duration

At rest, tyre loaded

0 to about 4 s

about 4 s

Start by push button

about 5 to 7 s

about 2 s

Wrapping at speed

about 8 to 15 s

about 7 s

Start to full cover

about 5 to 15 s

about 10 s

The times come from frames 1 s apart. The clip ends as the cover closes, so loading and unloading fall outside it. Our quoted 18 to 30 s per tyre includes the full wrap at the set overlap.

How the tyre wrapper works

The tyre stands on edge on driven rollers, and the ring passes through its eye. As the ring turns, it lays the packing material over the section of the tyre. At the same time the rollers turn the tyre, so each turn of material overlaps the last and the cover closes all the way round.

On our FPT-100 the packing material is fixed on the ring, and the ring returns to its start position and resets on its own. Inverters drive the ring and the rollers, so they start and stop softly, and the speed ratio sets the overlap. A special brake on the film roller sets the packing tension.

Feature on the FPT-100

What it does

Ring with material holder

Carries the material through the tyre eye

Driven support rollers

Turn the tyre during the wrap

Inverters on ring and rollers

Soft start and stop, overlap setting

Automatic and semi-automatic modes

Choice per packing job

Adjustment for tyre OD and ID

Fits different tyre sizes

Logo tape option

Covers the tyre OD with a printed tape while wrapping

FPT-100 specifications

FPT-100 tyre packing machine

Specification

Tyre inner diameter

300 to 700 mm

Tyre outer diameter

510 to 800 mm

Tyre width

40 to 250 mm

Tyre weight

10 to 30 kg

Packing material

PE, stretch film, knit belt, PP or silver paper

Ring speed

0 to 120 rpm

Wrapping speed

18 to 30 s per tyre

Overlap rate

10% to 80%

Power

1.5 kW, 380 V, 50 Hz or to order

Truck and larger car tyres move to our FPT-300, rated for 800 to 1,200 mm OD and 10 to 100 kg at 25 to 40 s per tyre.

Takt check

For an illustrative target of 100 tyres per hour, the takt is 3,600 ÷ 100 = 36 s per tyre. With a wrap of 18 to 30 s, there are 6 to 18 s left to load and unload the tyre by hand.

At the short end that is tight for one operator, so above about 100 tyres per hour we add a powered infeed and outfeed. That is the setup of our horizontal tyre wrapper, which runs inline at 25 to 35 s per tyre.

Selection checklist for a tyre wrapping machine

Tyre ID, OD, width and weight, against the FPT-100 or FPT-300 window.

Packing material: film, knit belt, PP or paper, and the overlap.

Logo tape on the OD, if the brand needs to show.

Output per hour, and manual or powered loading.

Labelling and stacking after the wrap.

Controls and safety

The ring and the rollers turn fast and close to the operator’s hands. At about 12 s on the clip the operator’s hand adjusts the material while the machine runs. That reach is the move to design out. On our FPT-100 guardrails and moving-part covers keep hands away from the moving parts, and material adjustment happens only with the ring stopped.

Stop, isolate and lock out the machine before anyone threads new material, clears a break or works on the ring or rollers. Loading and unloading the tyre happen only with the machine at rest.

The standards that apply depend on the destination market. For CE markets, ISO 12100 sets the risk-assessment method and EN 415-10 covers general requirements for packaging machines, which fixes guarding and the stop arrangement.

Engineering FAQ

Q: How long does it take to wrap a tyre?
A: On the clip the cover closes about 10 s after the start.
