The mainframe height adjusts so the ring rotates centred on the coil. Carrier roller speed and ring speed are adjustable separately, and together they set the overlap. The difference is weight. Steel strip coils are wound on standard 508 or 610 mm cores and are heavy for their size, so they need the steel coil wrapper. Plastic pipe and hose coils are light, so the pipe coil wrapper is enough and wraps them faster.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"coil-weight\">Working out coil weight<\/h2>\n<p>For a steel coil, weight = \u03c0 \u00f7 4 \u00d7 (OD\u00b2 \u2212 ID\u00b2) \u00d7 width \u00d7 7,850 kg\/m\u00b3. For an illustrative strip coil of 508 mm ID, 900 mm OD and 150 mm width:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Ring area.<\/strong> \u03c0 \u00f7 4 \u00d7 (0.9\u00b2 \u2212 0.508\u00b2) = 0.7854 \u00d7 0.552 = about 0.434 m\u00b2.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Volume.<\/strong> 0.434 \u00d7 0.15 = about 0.065 m\u00b3.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weight.<\/strong> 0.065 \u00d7 7,850 = about 510 kg.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That is within the steel coil wrapper&#8217;s 20\u20131,000 kg, and about five times the pipe coil wrapper&#8217;s 100 kg limit. A plastic pipe coil of the same size weighs only a fraction of this, so check your heaviest coil before you choose.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"rollers\">Rollers and surface<\/h2>\n<p>The steel coil wrapper uses specially coated protective and carrier rollers, so the coil turns without marking its edges. Carrier roller speed, ring speed, material tension and overlap are all adjustable. Coils roll in and out, which suits lighter steel coils. The standards that apply depend on the destination market.
