Our horizontal ring wrapper spirals stretch film, or VCI paper, round the bundle on a motorized roller conveyor and takes bundles 2,000–6,000 mm long and up to 4,000 kg. Selection turns on bundle diameter, length and weight, bundles per hour, corrosion protection, and integration with bundling, strapping or stacking. A worked example below shows how ring speed, film width and overlap set line speed and film use.

Why cover steel rod bundles

Bright and ground steel rod rusts quickly when wet, and loose bars rub and mark each other. A film cover holds bars tight, keeps off rain and dust, and stops ends catching during handling; for long sea freight, VCI paper under or instead of the film adds corrosion protection.

How the rod wrapping line works

At the infeed on the motorized roller conveyor, a film roll on a stand lays a sheet over the bars before the spiral wrap. A motor-driven conveyor moves the bundle forward steadily through the orbital ring, which turns inside an interlocking perimeter guard and spirals stretch film evenly round it. Ring speed and overlap are set on the panel beside the ring; covered packs get extra turns at each end.

Rod wrapper data

Item

Value

Package OD

200–2,000 mm

Package length

2,000–6,000 mm

Package weight

100–4,000 kg

Ring speed

30–60 r/min

Overlap

20–90%

Cover

PE stretch film, VCI paper or others

Power

6.5 kW; 380/400/415 V, 50/60 Hz

Worked example: speed and film use

Illustrative bundle: 200 mm across, 6 m long, 250 mm film at 50% overlap, ring at top speed 60 r/min. Dropping to 30% overlap gives 10.5 m/min and about 34 s, with one layer less cover. For sea freight, keep the overlap at 50% or more.

Ways to close the cover

A spiral wrap alone leaves the bundle ends open. For a fully closed pack we offer four approaches:

Wrap six sides, with a second pass across the bundle.

Lay a full film cover, PE or bubble, round the bundle before the spiral wrap.

Lay film over the top only, as on this line — less film than option 2, but the unit costs more.

Cover the two ends with film — saves the most stretch film, but the most complex.

If the product can take heat, shrink packing gives the tidiest finish.

Best practices for rod bundles

Tie the bundle first, so bars do not slide while the ring wraps.

Pad or cap sharp bar ends so they do not tear the film.

Add end turns so the cover closes over the ends.

Use VCI paper for long storage or sea freight.

Keep film tension even, so the cover is tight but does not tear.

Selection checklist

Geometry and load limits: bundle OD, length and weight.

Corrosion needs: VCI paper for long storage or sea freight.

Throughput and interface: bundles per hour and line links to bundling, strapping or stacking.

End covering: six sides, full film, top-only or end caps.

Plant signals: machine interfaces agreed with your automation.

Safety: EN 415-10 and ISO 12100

The design of rod wrapping equipment references EN 415-10 for packaging machine safety and applies ISO 12100 principles for hazard identification and risk reduction. The hazards that matter are the turning ring, a heavy bundle in motion and the powered rollers. The ring runs inside an interlocking perimeter guard, and opening the guard door stops it. These standards are used as a design and risk-assessment reference framework, not as evidence that a delivered unit carries independent certification; any certificates for your single machine are confirmed in the project ordering agreement.

Engineering FAQ

Q: How long can the bundles be?

A: From 2,000 to 6,000 mm.

Q: What can it wrap with?

A: PE stretch film, VCI paper or other covers.

Q: What sets the speed?

A: Ring speed, film width and overlap.

Q: Which standard applies?

A: EN 415-10 sets packaging machine safety; ISO 12100 sets the risk-assessment method.

Next step

Send bundle sizes, weights and output to info@fhopepack.com.

We set the ring, cover and conveyors.

We reply with a layout and quotation once the details are confirmed.

Related reading

Horizontal ring stretch wrapper for rod (product)

Automatic pipe and tube bagging packing machine

Giant horizontal orbital stretch wrapping machine with film covering unit

Orbital wrapper for long objects with 3 straps

Online pipe strapping line

Sources

Package data: horizontal ring stretch wrapper for rod product page

Machine in action: our steel rod wrapping line, shown in the video embedded above

Worked example: illustrative figures

Standards scope: ISO 12100; EN 415-10 — referenced for design and risk assessment.

Overview This engineering guide helps plant, production and purchasing teams choose horizontal orbital wrappers for steel rod bundles — the equipment that covers each bundle in film as it runs along the line.
