In stage one, each coil lies flat on yellow powered rollers and a vertical ring wraps it through the eye in white film. In stage two, a column stacker sets the wrapped coils on timber runners at marked stack positions, and a separate roller-table tilter turns between vertical and horizontal. Below we explain why the two stages are separated and what to specify for each.

Table of Contents

What the clip shows

Why wrapping and stacking are separate stages

Stage one: eye-through wrapping

Stage two: stacking on timber runners

The roller-table tilter

What changes for copper coils

Selection checklist for a two-stage line

Controls and safety

Engineering FAQ

Next step

Related reading

Sources

What the clip shows

Clip time

What is on screen

0–12 s

a coil lies flat on yellow powered rollers inside a vertical ring, which wraps it through the eye in white film

about 18 s

the wrapped coil sits on a silver roller section beside the next station

22–30 s

a green column stacker sets a wrapped coil on timber runners at floor positions marked A and B

36–44 s

a tall roller table on a green base stands vertical, then tilts down towards horizontal

to 52 s

the tilter settles and the line is ready for the next coil

Small picture-in-picture windows show operators at the control desk and the infeed conveyor.

Why wrapping and stacking are separate stages

Each coil is sealed on its own. Coils can later be taken off a stack one by one without opening a package.

The ring only fits one coil. A ring sized for a full stack would be larger and slower.

The stacker works off-line from the ring. While the stacker builds a stack, the ring is already wrapping the next coil.

Stage one: eye-through wrapping

The ring passes through the coil eye while the rollers turn the coil, so film covers the outside, the bore and both faces. On our coil packing lines, PLC/HMI programs set centring, tension and overlap for each coil type. Film, paper or woven wrap can be specified, and PET or steel strapping can follow, as on our two-stage coil wrapping and strapping line.

Stage two: stacking on timber runners

The stacker in the clip is a slewing column with an arm. It picks a wrapped coil and swings it out to a stack position on the floor.

Timber runners are laid at the stack position.

The arm lowers the first coil onto the runners.

The next coil goes on top, eye vertical, until the stack is complete.

A forklift takes the stack away on the runners.

Our copper coil packaging line lists stacking accuracy of ±2 mm and an automatic timber runner dispenser as an option, so runners need not be placed by hand. The automatic coil packing line allows up to 6 coils per stack.

The roller-table tilter

The last machine in the clip is a tilter with a roller table. Coils roll onto the table, and the table tilts through 90° to change the coil from eye vertical to eye horizontal, or back.

This is how a line meets the plant’s dispatch rule: some want coils eye to sky on runners, others eye to wall. The automatic coil packing line offers both.

What changes for copper coils

Copper strip and copper coils mark easily. On our copper coil packaging line:

Item

Value

Coil weight, basic version

20–1,500 kg

Coil weight, standard version

100–4,000 kg

Contact parts

PU (polyurethane) coated

Stacking accuracy

±2 mm

Controls

Siemens PLC and HMI, auto/manual

Timber runners

automatic dispenser, option

PU-coated contact parts keep steel off the copper surface during transfer, tilting and stacking. Every line is configured per project, so the coil range and options can change.

Selection checklist for a two-stage line

Coil OD, ID, width and weight, smallest and largest.

Wrap material and overlap; strapping after wrapping or not.

Stack height, stack pattern and timber runner size.

Eye to sky or eye to wall at dispatch.

Coils per hour and how stacks leave the floor.

Surface sensitivity: bare copper, tinned, or coated.

Controls and safety

The standards that apply depend on the destination market. For CE markets, ISO 12100 sets the risk-assessment method and EN 415-10 covers general requirements for packaging machines, which fixes guarding and the emergency-stop arrangement.

The slewing stacker sweeps an area of floor, so its stack positions sit inside the guarded zone. Fencing and stop circuits are fixed in the risk assessment for each layout.

Engineering FAQ

Q: Why not wrap the whole stack instead of each coil?
A: Single coils are taken off the stack later and dispatched separately. Wrapping each coil keeps the rest of the stack sealed when one coil is removed.

Q: How heavy can the coils be?
A: Our copper coil packaging line lists 20–1,500 kg for the basic version and 100–4,000 kg for the standard version.

Q: How does the line avoid scratching copper surfaces?
A: Contact parts on our copper coil packaging line are PU (polyurethane) coated, so steel does not touch the copper during transfer and stacking.

Q: How accurate is the stacking?
A: The copper coil packaging line lists ±2 mm stacking accuracy.

Q: Do the timber runners have to be placed by hand?
A: No. An automatic timber runner dispenser is an option on our copper coil packaging line, which lays the runners before the stacker sets the first coil.

Q: Can the line pack eye to wall as well as eye to sky?
A: Yes. The roller-table tilter turns coils through 90° between the two orientations.

Next step

We plan a two-stage coil packing line in three steps:

Submit your layout drawing with coil range, stack pattern and dispatch orientation, to info@fhopepack.com.

Receive a proposal within 48 hours, with the wrapper, stacker, tilter and floor layout.

Book a site survey so we confirm stack positions, forklift routes and the guarded zone.

Related reading

Copper Strip Coil Packing Line: Upending, Eye-Through Wrapping and Stacking Without Surface Damage

Slit Coil Stretch Wrapping and Stacking Line: Eye-Through Ring to Gantry Stacker

Steel Coil Upender and Eye-Through Wrapping Line: Where the Safety Gains Come From

Copper coil packaging line

Sources

Machine in action: the video on YouTube (52 s)

Coil weight ranges, PU-coated contact parts, ±2 mm stacking, Siemens PLC and HMI, timber runner dispenser: Copper coil packaging line

Up to 6 coils per stack, eye to sky / eye to wall, PLC/HMI centring, tension and overlap, wrap and strap options: Automatic coil packing line

Standards scope: ISO 12100:2010; EN 415-10:2014

Proposal timing: approved house CTA (proposal within 48 hours)

Last reviewed: 2026-10-06

Executive summary This 52 s clip splits coil packing into two stages.
