The yellow film carriage runs along the top beam, and the film drops from it onto the roll as the roll turns. The film builds up round the roll from one end to the other, and the roll is fully covered when the carriage finishes its pass.

The control panel sits on the right-hand column, and a warning sign is fixed to the left column.

How radial roll wrapping works

Part

What it does

Cradle

Holds the roll on its side and turns it

Top beam

Carries the film carriage over the roll

Film carriage

Travels along the roll and feeds stretch film

Control panel

Sets roll turns, carriage speed and overlap

The roll turns, and the carriage moves along it, so the film lays on as a spiral round the outside. Because the roll lies flat on the cradle, the cloth is never stood on its end. The roll does not have to be lifted onto a turntable either.

Estimating roll turns and film

The carriage moves a set distance for each turn of the roll. Illustrative example for a roll 1,600 mm long and 400 mm in diameter, with 500 mm film at 50% overlap:

Item

Value

Roll length

1,600 mm

Advance per roll turn, 500 × 0.5

250 mm

Roll turns to cover the length

about 7

Roll circumference, π × 400 mm

1,257 mm

Film laid on the roll surface, 7 × 1.257 m

about 8.8 m

Extra turns at each end hold the film edge and cover the roll ends better. Add them to the count when you set the program.

Protecting the roll

Concern

How it is handled

Flat spots on the cloth

The roll lies in a cradle, not on a flat bed

Dust and damp in storage

Full film cover round the outside

Loose cloth end

The first turns of film hold the cloth end down

Roll ends

Extra end turns fold film over the edges

Set the film tension low enough that it does not mark soft fabric. A tight wrap on a soft roll can leave lines in the outer layers.

Controls and safety

The control panel is on the right-hand column of the frame, and a warning sign marks the frame. Keep clear of the turning roll and the moving carriage while the machine runs.

The standards that apply depend on the destination market. For CE markets, ISO 12100 sets the risk-assessment method and EN 415-10 sets general requirements for packaging machines.

Selection checklist for a roll stretch wrapper

Roll diameter and length, smallest to largest.

Roll weight.

Fabric type and how easily it marks.

Film cover only, or film plus end caps.

Rolls per hour.

How rolls are loaded: crane, forklift or conveyor.

Engineering FAQ

Q: Does the roll stand up during wrapping?
A: No. It lies on its side in the cradle and turns, while the carriage travels along the top beam.

Q: How many turns does a roll need?
A: Roll length divided by the advance per turn gives the traverse turns, about 7 in our 1,600 mm example. End turns are added on top of that.

Q: How much film goes on one roll?
A: About 8.8 m in our example, for a 400 mm roll with 500 mm film at 50% overlap.

Q: Will the film mark soft fabric?
A: It can if the tension is too high. Set it low for soft rolls and test on your own fabric.

Q: Are the roll ends covered?
A: Extra turns at each end fold the film over the edges. Separate end caps can be added if needed.

Next step

We plan your roll stretch wrapper in three steps:

Submit your layout drawing with roll sizes, weights and output to info@fhopepack.com.

Receive a proposal within 48 hours, with the frame size and wrap program.

Book a site survey to check roll loading and floor space.

Related reading

Horizontal orbital stretch wrapper

E300 horizontal stretch wrapper

Video: horizontal stretch wrapper for light paper products

Sources

Machine content: FHOPE engineering team, 2026-10-04

Turns and film example: our worked example, illustrative values

Machine in action: our video on YouTube

Standards scope: ISO 12100:2010, EN 415-10:2014

Last reviewed: 2026-10-04

Executive summary A fabric roll has to be wrapped round its whole outside without flattening it or pulling the cloth out of line.
