What an automatic pallet packing line does

An automatic pallet packing line replaces the person who walks a film roll around a load. The load arrives on a roller conveyor, moves into the wrapping machine, and is covered while it rotates. Once the film cycle finishes, the wrapped load continues out the other side. A strapping station, either on the same line or as a following step, adds the band that ties the load to the pallet.

Two wrapper layouts are common. A rotary-arm wrapper carries the film on an arm that orbits the load. A turntable wrapper spins the load and feeds the film from a fixed carriage. Both give the same spiral film coverage. The choice depends on load weight, stability and the floor space you have.

The value shows up at the hand-off points. Nothing has to be lifted or re-positioned between feed, wrap and exit, so the load leaves the line as one unit. The operator monitors from a console instead of walking around every load.

How wrapping and strapping protect a pallet load

Film and band hold the load in different directions, and they work together. Film wraps around the outside of the stack and presses inward. That inward pressure keeps stacked items from sliding against each other, keeps loose layers from spreading, and seals the load against dust, moisture and abrasion.

The band works around the other axis. A strap pulled tight around the load, usually at the height of the items rather than the empty pallet, holds the stack together on its way to the truck. Strapping resists the sideways forces that film alone cannot stop, such as a fork truck turning or a truck braking.

Two details decide whether strapping helps or hurts. An edge protector under each strap spreads the band load so it does not cut cardboard or crush soft packaging. And tension has to be right — too loose holds nothing, too tight damages the very product you are protecting.

What drives wrap quality

Wrap quality is set on the machine, not guessed at the line. Five settings decide whether the load holds together:

Film tension and pre-stretch. More stretch uses less film, but tension that is too high can crush lightweight packaging.
Number of layers and overlap. Each extra layer adds confinement; overlap decides whether the film forms a continuous cover.
Rotation and carriage speed. These set the film angle on the stack and therefore how tight the wrap sits.

Strapping gives the pallet load something film cannot: a rigid hoop that resists shifts. A tall stack of light items stays on the pallet through normal handling mainly because the straps hold it there. A load with smooth film on the outside is actually more likely to slide than a rough one, so a band is the safety net for long transport.

The strapping step matters most when loads are stacked, shipped long distances, or handled roughly at transfer points. It does not fix an unstable stack. It holds what the wrap has already stabilised, and the two are designed as a pair.

One honest note. The clip in this article is the wrapping half of the line working. A strap is not shown being applied anywhere in the footage, even though the page is titled as a packing line with strapping. So the strapping step — where it sits, what band it uses, and at what tension — has to be confirmed with the supplier and seen in an uncut run before you order.
