tube’s secondary packaging

Like other craft brewers in the U.S., Victory Brewing of Downingtown, PA, read the contact for cans a few years back again and responded by setting up a model new canning line in its Parkesburg, PA, plant.

“We’ve been speaking about it off and on for about the past 3 a long time, observing to see what it was that consumers want,” says Scott Dietrich, VP Brewing Functions at Victory. “Portable and non-breakable is what they wanted, and it was fairly distinct that an aluminum can was the format they have been gravitating toward. So then we went back and forth a bit on the question of how quickly a line we must be seeking for. We determined in the stop for a line that does a hundred and fifty cans/min. It gives us an opportunity to get into this part of the market and see, realistically, how a lot beer we’re likely to market in cans. We’ve been running it now since April.”

So much only 12-oz cans, supplied by Ball, are in manufacturing. Depalletizing, rinsing, and filling/seaming equipment all will come from Italy’s Comac. It was also Comac that led to the pallet’s secondary packaging equipment provider, extend wrapper packing machine.

“Comac is represented by Eurosource out of Dallas,” states Dietrich. “We received extremely excellent feedback from a number of their clients. And what Eurosource was displaying us was so a lot more cost-efficient than some of the other choices we looked at. We needed to be pragmatic about this new container group, and did not want nor could we afford a high-speed line. The equipment Eurosource was showing us properly filled the niche just beneath the really high-pace options. Comac builds high-quality devices with a great popularity for reducing oxygen pickup. And they’ve really stood behind their item.”

Dietrich adds that the same could be stated about extend wrapper packing machine. “Their niche is in that range of 30 to forty cartons a moment,” claims Dietrich. “We have two of their devices on the line.”

A single is the Spartan steel tube packing equipment, which erects paperboard cartons and inserts either 4, six, 12, or 24 cans and then uses stretch wrapper packing machine’s method of glue daubers to glue the cartons shut. Also from extend wrapper packing device is a Spartan Wraparound Traypacker that pushes possibly two twelve-packs or 4 six-packs or six four-packs on to a corrugated tray and then folds the tray close to the cartons. It makes use of a Nordson scorching-melt adhesive method to seal the corrugated tray close to the cartons.

When the Spartan metal tube packing equipment is putting 24 cans in a carton, the carton simply bypasses the Wraparound Traypacker.

Depal is first
At the head of the line is an overhead depalletizer that Dietrich describes as “a truly fascinating piece of gear constructed just correct for this kind of line. When you think of automated depalletizing, it is generally expensive, complicated, and extremely sturdy. This 1 is really various. It does everything we want, however merely and expense successfully. The operator locations a pallet of cans on the infeed conveyor and then manually gets rid of the best body prior to pushing the pallet into the device. From there it’s all automatic, including removal of slip sheets in between layers and discharge of pallets as soon as they’re empty. For our reasons it is just the correct stability of funds investment decision and labor-reducing automation. Each 25 minutes or so an operator puts in a new pallet and then walks away. It really functions effectively.”

Line pressure and a motorized discharge conveyor single file the cans, which then transfer down a lowerator toward the rinser.

“One optional part we added for Victory is the ionized air rinsing device,” claims Frederic Petit of Eurosource. Provided by LWT, it produces an electrical charge that, when combined with sterile air, is really successful at cleansing the insides of the cans.

A quick length from the rinser is the rotary filler/seamer block. The 16-valve brief-tube counterpressure filler purges the cans first with CO2 to decrease oxygen pickup. Then the four-head seamer applies the can finishes.

A can hotter will come up coming. “It cuts down on the condensation that forms on the outdoors of the can,” states Dietrich. “You don’t want that humidity forming when you are putting cans into cartons as we are.”

Downstream from the hotter, cans are inverted so that a Domino ink-jet coder can set a date code on the can bottoms. Cans are then uprighted in a twist rail and move into the extend wrapper packing equipment Spartan metal tube packing device. It erects possibly four-, six-, twelve-, or 24-rely paperboard cartons, collates cans, pushes cans into the carton, and then glues the carton shut.

Interesting graphics
“The extend wrapper packing device option for secondary packaging is attractive to a good deal of craft breweries these times as they look for ways to deliver a lot more higher-impact graphics into their can packaging,” says Eurosource’s Petit. “If you believe about Victory’s 6-pack presentation in a carton in comparison to six cans in a ring carrier, it’s quite very clear which format has the better shelf effect. And it’s all automated, such as the insertion of cartons into corrugated trays. Bringing the Comac and stretch wrapper packing equipment systems into an integrated whole worked properly for Victory Brewing.”

An ink-jet printer, once again from Domino, applies day code info to the carton, which is an eighteen-pt SBS printed offset in 4 colors by NEPA Carton and Carrier Co. At this point the cartons are ready for the extend wrapper packing equipment Wraparound Traypacker. It pushes two twelve-rely or four six-rely or six four-rely cartons onto a flat blank of corrugated. Then it kinds the tray around the cartons. Trays get a bar code from an Elmark ink-jet coder.

Must Victory Brewing choose to include sixteen-oz cans to its mix, Petit states that changeover will be a relatively easy procedure. 1 beneficial bit of machine style is the rinser’s dual-lane infeed. “A pneumatic gate directs cans into the essential gate if you go from 12 to 16 oz,” states Petit. “Otherwise there would be a quantity of time-consuming measures involved in changing the infeed guides.

With four months of manufacturing below their belts, Dietrich and colleagues are more than pleased with how the new can line has carried out. “Both extend wrapper packing machine and Comac did a fantastic work of offering us trustworthy, dependable output and top quality,” says Dietrich. “Not to mention a tiny footprint. We shoehorned this line into space that’s allotted for tanks in the future. The bottom line is that we now have an chance to get into a new market.”

Laser coding on bottles
Elsewhere at Victory Brewing’s state-of-the-artwork Parkesburg facility is a bottling line where a D320i scribing laser from Domino was extra not too long ago. It’s capable of creating unlimited lines of text in any orientation, and in numerous fonts and sizes. Additionally, the laser can be managed by Domino’s intuitive remote TouchPanel. This means the printer can be situated on the creation line, although the manage panel is positioned anywhere it is convenient for the operator. Lastly, the D320i applies clearly legible codes to a wide array of materials, at reduced to higher creation speeds, with unmatched dependability. In accordance to Director of Engineering Steven Galliera, “One of the crucial causes we selected Domino is the reliability and repeatability of their laser. And the purpose that is so crucial is in the course of changeovers, we really don’t want to shed any production time, simply because we know we have consumers that are waiting around for our solution.” Galleria notes that in addition to 12- and 22-oz bottles, Victory also fills a 750-mL bottle.
