Zhrnutie: A steel coil inverter (upender) rotates a vertically stored coil to a horizontal orientation for wrapping lines. The video shows the machine gripping a vertical coil, turning it to horizontal, and discharging it onto a pallet. This page explains the process, process flow fit, and RFQ inputs. The rated outputs are not shown in the clip.

What a Coil Inverter Is

A steel coil inverter — also called an upender — changes a coil’s orientation from vertical to horizontal. Horizontal is the flat position required by coil packing lines, strapping machines, and most downstream handling equipment.

The machine uses a gantry structure that spans the coil. Clamping arms on the gantry legs grip the coil body, the gantry rotates, and the coil is carried from vertical to horizontal. After rotation the coil is discharged onto a pallet or conveyor. Typical cycle time is 60 to 120 seconds for a full upend cycle.

The coil inverter is the interface station between coil storage and the wrapping line. Its parameters vary by model but the mechanism is the same.

Why Coils Need Upending

Coils are commonly stored vertically in racking systems or on floor stacks to save floor space. Vertical storage is stable when the coil is supported by its outer diameter and the center of gravity is low.

Downstream processes — stretch wrapping, strapping, shrink packaging — usually require the coil to be horizontal. A flat coil rides on a conveyor, is wrapped by a horizontal line or orbital wrapper, and can be strapped without tipping risk.

Without a coil inverter, the only way to convert vertical to horizontal is by manual crane operations or by using the wrapping line itself as an upender. Both approaches carry safety risks. A crane lift of a multi-tonne coil near personnel is a recognized hazard. Using a wrapping line for upending also exposes the film carriage and turntable to shock loads.

The machine removes both risks by providing a dedicated, interlocked machine for the orientation change only. Typical clamping force is 50 to 200 kN depending on coil mass.

How the Upend Cycle Works

The video on this page shows the full upend cycle:

  1. Feed: A steel coil stands vertically. The clamping arms close. The operator initiates the cycle.
  2. Točiť sa: The gantry rotates the clamped coil from vertical to horizontal.
  3. doprava: The horizontal coil moves along a track. Arms retract at discharge.
  4. výtok: The coil is placed on a pallet. The gantry returns.

This is the pattern the machine repeats. The video shows the cycle end to end.

Gantry Design and Structure

The coil inverter shown in the video uses a gantry-type construction. The main frame is a heavy steel portal spanning the coil width. The moving arms — painted yellow for visibility — clamp onto the coil body. The base moves along a track.

Key structural features observed:

  • Hlavný rám: Green-painted heavy steel gantry.
  • Clamping arms: Yellow arms that grip the coil at two points on the gantry legs.
  • Základná jednotka: Yellow base with wheels moving along a track.
  • Safety cage: Yellow mesh guards around the moving parts.

The control panel is a grey unit with a digital screen, buttons (some with indicator lights), and a keypad, located at operator height. PLC programmable logic controller manages the cycle.

Camera Range: What You Can See

The video on this page covers the following:

  • Wide shot of the machine at the feed position, showing the full gantry structure and the vertical coil on the base.
  • Close-up of the clamping arms engaging the coil.
  • Side view of the rotation, showing the coil moving from vertical to horizontal.
  • Front view of the horizontal coil being transported along the track.
  • Output area view showing the coil discharged onto a pallet.
  • Control panel close-up and multiple-angle views during repeat cycles.

The video shows the full upend cycle from multiple camera angles. However, the rated capacity, exact machine dimensions, cycle time, and model designation are not displayed on-screen. These specifications must be verified against the builder’s published data.

Where This Version Stops — Parameters Not Shown

The video demonstrates the mechanical cycle. It does not show the machine’s rated outputs. Specifically:

  • Rated coil weight: The maximum coil mass the gantry is engineered to carry is not displayed.
  • Coil diameter range: The video shows one coil size; the machine’s configurable range is model-dependent.
  • Čas cyklu: The duration of one complete upend cycle is not indicated.
  • Označenie modelu: The specific model number is not visible in the footage.
  • Bezpečnostné certifikáty: CE marking or other certification status requires verification from the builder.

For these parameters, consult the builder’s published specifications or request a quote with your coil dimensions and weight.

Často kladené otázky týkajúce sa inžinierstva

Q: What is the difference between a coil inverter and a coil upender? A: They are the same machine. “Inverter” and “upender” are interchangeable industry terms. Both describe a machine that rotates a vertical coil to a horizontal position.

Q: Can a coil inverter handle both eye-vertical and eye-horizontal coils? A: Yes. The clamping arms grip the coil body, not the eye. The machine works for both storage orientations.

Q: Does the coil inverter require a pit or trench in the floor? A: Not necessarily. The gantry-type design runs on a wheeled base along a track on the floor surface. A pit is only needed if the downstream conveyor height requires it.

Q: How does the safety system work? A: The machine has yellow safety cages with mesh guards around moving parts. The cages are interlocked with the control system. A red emergency stop button is on the control panel.

Q: What safety standards apply? A: Standards depend on the destination market. For CE markets, ISO 12100 sets the risk-assessment method and EN 415-10 covers packaging machine safety. Confirm with the builder.

Q: Can the coil inverter be integrated with an automatic wrapping line? A: Yes. The discharge station can feed directly onto a horizontal coil wrapping line conveyor.

Next Step: RFQ Checklist

To receive a coil inverter configuration proposal, send your requirements to info@fhopepack.com:

  1. Confirm your coil OD range (minimum and maximum).
  2. Confirm your coil weight (minimum and maximum per coil).
  3. Attach a layout drawing showing available floor space.
  4. Receive a configuration proposal with rated specifications within 48 hours, and book a site survey if you want the infeed and outfeed layout checked before the build.

With this information the engineering team can select the correct model and return a configuration proposal with rated specifications. See the Stroj na balenie cievok a Horizontálny stroj na ovíjanie cievok product pages for related equipment.
