> Slit coils weigh from 30 kg to several tonnes, far beyond safe manual lifting, and their soft edges dent at the first knock. Our coil stacking machine sits at the end of a slit coil packing line. It lifts each wrapped coil off the line and sets it eye-to-sky on a wooden pallet, coil by coil, until the stack reaches its set height.
A bright brass strip coil lies flat, eye up, on a wooden cross pallet. The pallet rides a powered roller conveyor with orange side guides, so it arrives square under the stacking station. Customer engineers stand at the line during acceptance, and the finished stack leaves on the same conveyor.

Why stack eye-to-sky
A narrow coil standing on its edge rolls and its outer turns take the load. Laid flat, eye up, the coil rests on its whole face, so several coils can be stacked on one pallet and strapped as one unit. Copper and brass strip coils are soft, so the stacking step has to set each coil down without dropping or sliding it.
Stacker types
- **Vacuum stacker:** a gantry carries a vacuum chuck that holds the coil by its face. Our vacuum stacker handles coils up to 500 kg, or 800 kg for tight coils, and stacks them without timber blocks. Copper, brass and aluminium are not magnetic, so vacuum is the usual choice for them.
- **Mechanical fork stacker:** four fork arms lift heavy coils up to 4,600 kg. It needs timber blocks over 50 mm high between coils so the forks can get out.
- **ID/OD grab:** holds film-wrapped or porous coils where a vacuum cannot seal.
On one quoted steel coil line the gantry stacker was rated for a stack height of 1,120 mm including the pallet and a stack weight of 8,000 kg. Limits for your line are confirmed at quote.
Holding the coil if power fails
Our vacuum lifter has a vacuum accumulator. After a sudden power cut it keeps the copper coil held for more than 5 minutes, the CE figure. A buzzer and warning light alarm on power failure or vacuum leak. The chuck is rated for 1,800 kg against a 500 kg coil, a safety factor above three, and the pump reaches a vacuum above 85%. The chuck has three chambers with separate control, so only the chambers covered by a smaller coil open.
Machinevolgorde
1. An empty wooden pallet is fed onto the stacking conveyor and stops in position.
2. The wrapped coil arrives from the line, already turned eye-to-sky by a tilter.
3. The stacker head picks the coil and centres it over the pallet.
4. The coil is lowered onto the pallet deck or the coil below. Where spacers are used, an automatic timber feeder places them.
5. Steps 2 to 4 repeat until the set number of coils is stacked.
6. The full pallet runs out on the roller conveyor to strapping or wrapping.

Stapelhoogte en gewicht
**Stack height = coils × coil width + (coils − 1) × spacer + pallet height**
**Stack weight = coils per stack × coil weight**
Example only: six 100 mm wide brass coils with 10 mm spacers on a 150 mm pallet give 6 × 100 + 5 × 10 + 150 = 800 mm, inside the 1,120 mm figure above. At 300 kg per coil the stack weighs 6 × 300 = 1,800 kg. Both figures must fit your forklift, racking and truck limits, so the coil count per stack is set from the lower of the two.
At 20 coils per hour, a six-coil stack fills every 18 minutes, which is the time the out-feed has to strap and clear it.
Selectie checklist
1. Coil material: steel, copper, brass or aluminium.
2. Coil OD, ID, width and weight range.
3. Coils per hour from the slitter.
4. Coils per stack and maximum stack height.
5. Pallet type and size, and pads between coils.
6. What follows stacking: strapping, wrapping or weighing and labelling.
Veiligheid
We design to EN ISO 12100:2010 for risk assessment, EN 415-10 for packaging machine safety and EN 60204-1 for the electrical equipment. The stacker works inside a fenced cell, and opening the gate stops the head. Our vacuum lifter is CE certified.
Veelgestelde vragen over techniek
Q: Can one stacker handle different coil widths?
A: Yes, the lowering height for each coil is taken from the stack count and coil width in the recipe.
Q: Do I need timber between coils?
A: Not with the vacuum stacker, which sets coils face to face. The fork stacker needs timber blocks over 50 mm high.
Q: Can the stacker build mixed pallets?
A: It can, but most plants stack one coil size per pallet so the stack stays stable. This is confirmed at quote.
