How orbital wrapping works
The wrap comes from a ring, not a turntable. A rotating ring carries the stretch film carriage, passing through the inner diameter of the coil while the coil sits on support rollers. As the ring orbits through and around the coil, the film is laid down in overlapping layers over the full circumference. Coating stays even because the ring travel and the coil placement are fixed relative to each other.
Variations follow the machine configuration and the product.
The ring and the frame
The ring assembly is the heart of the machine. It carries the film carriage and rotates at a controlled speed, and its diameter sets the largest coil the machine can pass. The frame is welded steel, sized to hold the coil weight and carry the dynamic forces of the rotating ring. Exact ring-to-roller alignment and vibration control keep the wrap even, and service access is designed in from the start.
Carrying the coil
Coils are supported on rollers that carry the weight and can also turn the coil while the ring runs. V-rollers or flat rollers are chosen by the coil’s size and shape, and the support works per project based on coil weight and stability.
On many setups the coil turns slowly on its own, so the film reaches the full surface as the ring circles. The roller layout follows the coil plan, confirmed per project.
Film and pre-stretch
The film carriage feeds stretch film from the roll, and a pre-stretch unit draws it out between powered rollers running at different speeds before it is applied. Pre-stretch both cuts the film consumed per coil and raises the holding force the wrap applies. The amount of stretch is set per film grade and load, not to a fixed figure, and confirmed per project.
Control and the wrap recipe
A programmable controller runs the machine. Ring speed, roller speed where the coil rotates, the number of wraps and the start and stop of the cycle are set from an operator panel. Film tension and the wraps per coil are entered per load profile, and each product is recalled as a recipe instead of being re-entered by hand.
Loading and service
The cycle starts with placing the coil on the support rollers and threading the film, then starting the recipe. Routine service is straightforward because the ring, carriage and rollers are accessible from the working side. Checks cover the ring drive, pre-stretch rollers, coil rollers, film carriage and safety devices, per the machine manual.
