An orbital stretch wrap packaging machine wraps long products by moving the film, not the product. The bundle travels on a conveyor through a turning ring, and the ring lays a spiral of stretch film along the whole length. Our E400 takes bundles 100–400 mm across and 15–100 kg; the E600 takes 200–600 mm and 20–200 kg, with press-down devices that hold the bundle still while the ring turns.
On this automatic line a square bundle rides on green rollers into a white-framed wrapping station. A top press roller holds the bundle from above, and a wire-mesh guard with a latched door encloses the ring. The yellow film carriage spirals film round the bundle as it advances through the ring, and the bundle rolls out wrapped. The control cabinet beside the exit has a screen, a red emergency stop, a green start button and a rotary knob.

Why long bundles need orbital wrapping
A pallet wrapper turns the load on a turntable. A 6 m bundle of profiles or tubes cannot be turned like that, so the film has to travel round the product instead. In an orbital wrapper the film roll is mounted on a ring. The bundle moves along the conveyor through the ring, and each ring turn lays one wrap. The ratio of conveyor speed to ring speed sets the overlap, adjustable from 10% to 90%.
The result is a closed film tube that keeps dust and moisture out, holds the profiles together as one unit, and protects the surface from rubbing in transport.
Wrapping station and conveyors
- Ring drive. The ring runs on double rub wheels with adjustable friction. Ring speed is set by inverter, with soft start and stop and an automatic reset of the wrapping position.
- Film. Film tension is adjustable, and the material frame takes stretch film, paper, PP or woven material.
- trasportatori. Motor and gear box driven infeed and outfeed conveyors with inverter speed control. The conveyor structure protects the product surface; roller or PVC belt conveyors are available.
- Controllo. PLC with touch screen, photocell for the wrap position, and alarms that show faults on the screen.
- Opzione senza equipaggio. The E400 and E600 can take an automatic cutter and feeder: it clamps the film for the next wrap and cuts it, so film start and cut need no operator. Cut time per bundle is confirmed at quote.
Press-down devices and wrap control
A bundle that moves while the ring turns gets a loose, uneven wrap. The E600 holds it with:
- a top press device with soft material, so a bright or coated surface is not marked;
- two press-down devices, one on the infeed and one on the outlet conveyor;
- side protective devices, adjusted by hand, that stop the bundle shaking.
The press rollers are driven by pneumatic cylinders, and the pressing force is adjustable to protect the surface. The action time of the press devices is set in the program. On the touch screen the operator also sets head and end delays for partial wrapping, extra reinforcing turns at the head and the end, and the start and stop points of the wrap. A special tension control carriage is an option for very small or very large packages.

For a square or rectangular bundle, the figure to compare with “bundle OD” is the diagonal of the section.
Worked example: 6 m profile bundle
Take a profile bundle of 250 × 150 mm, 6,000 mm long and 85 kg, wrapped with 150 mm film at 50% overlap.

Risultato. The bundle fits the E400 by section, length and weight. At 50% overlap the 90 r/min ring caps conveyor speed at 6.75 m/min. One 6 m bundle takes about 53 s of travel wrapping plus about 4 s of end reinforcing, about 57 s in total. Film clamp-and-cut and transfer time depend on the line and are confirmed at quote.

The wrapper is built to EN 415-10, the safety requirements for packaging machines, with the risk assessment to ISO 12100:2010. The turning ring is the main hazard, so the wrapping station is guarded or curtained, the guard door is latched, and an emergency stop sits on the control panel. Guarding and CE documents are agreed per project.

Q: Does the bundle rotate? A: No. The bundle does not rotate; it advances in a straight line on the conveyor while the ring orbits round it.
Q: How is a square bundle sized for the ring? A: Use the section diagonal and compare it with the bundle OD range.
Q: Can it wrap only the ends? A: Yes. Head and end delays set partial wrapping, and reinforcing turns can be added at both ends.
Q: Can it link to a weighing system? A: An integrated scale that shares data with the ERP system is an option on the E600.
