Why small-ID cable coils are hard to wrap

On an eye-through wrapper, the ring and its film roll pass through the coil eye on every turn. A small eye leaves little room for the ring, the film and the coil wall to clear each other. Building wire, control cable and small hose often come in coils with a narrow eye.

We designed this machine for that case. Its ring wraps coils with an inner diameter as small as 90 mm, and it handles ID up to 250 mm on the same machine.

How our horizontal cable coil packing machine works

The coil lies eye to sky on the supporting rollers, and a vertical ring passes film through the eye. The operator places the coil on the rollers, the arms centre it, and the press-down device holds it before the ring starts. The machine has five working parts:

  2. Centring arms. Four groups of electric arms adjust to the reel size and set the winding centre point.
  3. Press-down device. Holds the coil down while the ring wraps.

Film cutting and feeding are automatic. The operator loads and unloads the coil by hand.

Cycle time and ring speed: a quick check

The ring speed limits how many turns fit in one cycle. That sets how far the coil must turn between ring passes:

  1. Turns per cycle. At the top ring speed of 120 r/min and a 30 s cycle, the ring makes 60 turns.
  2. Արտաքին շրջագիծ։ A 400 mm OD coil has π × 400 mm ≈ 1,257 mm around the outside.
  3. Advance per turn. 1,257 ÷ 60 ≈ 21 mm. To finish in 30 s, the coil turns about 21 mm at its OD per ring turn. Less advance means more turns and a longer cycle.
  4. Film check. The film band on the coil must be wider than that advance, plus the overlap you want.

At the eye, the same rotation moves far less. A 90 mm ID has π × 90 mm ≈ 283 mm around it, so the advance there is only 283 ÷ 60 ≈ 4.7 mm per turn. Overlap is much denser at the eye than at the OD, which is why we set the overlap for OD coverage. Smaller coils need fewer turns and finish faster. The 18–30 s range covers this spread across the size range.

Changeover between cable sizes

Cable plants often run many coil sizes on one shift. We reduce changeover time in three ways:

  • Stored programs. Each cable size has its own program with its settings. The operator picks it on the panel.
  • Electric centring. The four electric arms reset to the new reel size, so no hand adjustment of guides is needed.
  • Encoder positioning. The encoder confirms coil position and roller speed for the new size.

This makes the machine practical for operators without special skills.

Packing material for cable and wire coils

The machine wraps with PE, stretch film or PVC. LLDPE or PVC film is mounted on the ring. Overlap is set from 20% to 90% to suit the cable and the protection you need.

The machine has overcurrent protection. When a fault occurs, the indicator raises an alarm and displays the fault, so the operator can find it quickly. A shield and fence guard the ring during operation.
