> A mechanical inverter 180° and rotator turns a long, heavy load upside down inside two geared rings, with hydraulic clamps holding it tight through the turn. Ours uses a double chain drive with a worm reducer, inverter speed control and locking at any angle on emergency stop. A worked example sizes the ring opening and drive torque for an 8 t sheet bundle.

Why long loads are turned in a barrel
A short load can be turned on a C-frame or a tilt table. A long load cannot: a 6 m sheet bundle or a long profile pack would need a frame as tall as it is long to tip end over end. A barrel inverter turns the load about its own long axis instead, so the machine only has to be a little larger than the load's cross-section.
Turning by crane is the alternative. With long loads it means two hooks, slings that shift, and people close to a swinging load.
Our yellow barrel inverter
Our yellow barrel inverter stands on a grey steel base. Two large end rings with geared rims sit on support rollers in the base. Between the rings runs a cage of long yellow beams, with an upper and a lower clamp frame worked by blue hydraulic cylinders.
At the end of the cage is the load entry, lined up with a roller table. The operator runs it from a control cabinet beside the machine. Here the inverter turns empty, through a full half-turn, as a factory run-in test.
The 180° turn, step by step
1. **Feed.** The load enters the cage on the roller table or by forklift.
2. **Clamp.** The hydraulic clamp frames close on the load from above and below, at the set pressure.
3. **Turn.** The chain drive turns both rings together through 180°. The inverter ramps the speed up and down at each end.
4. **Lock.** The rings stop at 180°, held by the drive and the travel limits.
5. **Release.** The clamps open and the load, now upside down, leaves the cage.
Návrhové prvky
Our barrel inverter is built around these features:
- **Drive.** Double chain drive, with a helical gear and worm reducer.
- **Clamping.** Hydraulic clamping that adjusts to the load height, with pressure setting. The clamp pressure and the pad lining are chosen for the load surface and confirmed at quote.
- **Speed.** Inverter control for a fast, smooth and safe turn.
- **Travel limits.** Two displacement limiters end the turn.
- **Emergency stop.** The rings lock at any angle when the emergency stop is pressed.
- **Base.** Foundation loading adjustable to the package.
There is no standard size table. Each barrel inverter is built to the load, so ring size, length, capacity and drive power are confirmed at quote.
For shorter, lighter sheet bundles we also build a C-type 180° inverter, loaded by forklift, with a hydraulic press-down holder on top. Data from our quoted C-type steel sheet inverter:
| Item | C-type sheet inverter |
| :--- | :--- |
| Max. load | 4 t |
| Load size | L 1,000–4,000 × W 800–1,500 × H 80–400 mm |
| Drive | 3.0 kW turning gear motor + 2.2 kW hydraulic unit (5.2 kW total) |
| Machine size | approx. 3,000 × 2,200 × 2,200 mm |
| Machine weight | approx. 2.5 t |
| Turning speed | fixed |
Loads longer than 4,000 mm or heavier than 4 t, like the 8 t bundle below, go to the barrel type.
For palletised goods we build the pallet inverter, which we also call a pallet changer or pallet exchanger. It clamps the load on the floor and turns it so the pallet can be swapped. Data from our quotations:
| Item | FPFZ-C02 180° pallet inverter | FPFZ-CH01 pallet changer |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Capacity | 2.0 t | 1.5 t |
| Pallet / load size | L 1,000–1,200 × W 1,000–1,200 mm, H 610–2,000 mm | L 1,200 × W 1,200 mm, H 550–2,200 mm |
| Turn | 180° | tilts the load on its side for the pallet swap |
| Cycle time, approx. | 25 s per turn | 30–50 s |
| Motor power, approx. | 4.0 kW | 3.5 kW |
| Control | panel or wireless remote | panel or wireless remote |
| Power supply | 380 V, 50/60 Hz, 3 phase | 380 V, 50/60 Hz, 3 phase |
Worked example: an 8 t sheet bundle
Illustrative load: steel sheet bundle, 6,000 mm long, 1,500 mm wide, 600 mm high, 8 t.
**Ring opening.** The load turns about the ring axis, so the cage must clear the circle swept by its corners. Centred on the axis, that circle is the section diagonal: √(1,500² + 600²) ≈ 1,616 mm.
**Off-centre allowance.** If the clamps hold the load 50 mm off the axis, the farthest corner sits at √(750² + 350²) ≈ 828 mm. The swept diameter grows to about 1,655 mm, before beams and clearance.
**Drive torque.** That 50 mm offset puts an out-of-balance moment on the drive: T = m × g × e = 8,000 × 9.81 × 0.05 ≈ 3.9 kN·m. The drive and the brake are sized for this plus friction and acceleration, with margin.
**Length.** A 6,000 mm load needs support along its length, so the clamp frames span between the two rings.
Summary of the sizing:
| Check | Formula | Result |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Swept diameter, centred | √(W² + H²) | 1,616 mm |
| Swept diameter, 50 mm off-centre | 2 × √((W/2)² + (H/2 + e)²) | 1,655 mm |
| Out-of-balance torque | m × g × e | 3.9 kN·m |
| Load length between rings | L | 6,000 mm |
**Time.** At a ring speed of ω °/s, the turn takes 180 ÷ ω seconds, plus clamp and release. Ring speed, drive power and the full cycle depend on the load and are confirmed at quote.

Bezpečnost: EN 415-10 a ISO 12100
We use EN 415-10 as the reference for this handling machine, and the CE risk assessment is made to ISO 12100. The main hazards are the turning cage, the geared ring rims and the clamp frames. The area around the barrel is guarded, and the turn starts only with the clamps at pressure.
Perimeter fencing, interlocked access gates and light curtains at the infeed and outfeed are specified from the risk assessment for your plant. The rings lock at any angle on emergency stop, and the two displacement limiters end the travel.
Často kladené otázky k inženýrství
Q: Why use chains and a worm reducer rather than hydraulics for the turn?
A: The worm reducer resists back-driving. Together with the brake, it holds an off-centre load where it is if the drive stops.
Q: Will the load slide inside the cage?
A: Not when it is clamped. The hydraulic clamp pressure is set to the load, so a rigid pack is held from above and below.
Q: Can it stop at 90°?
A: Yes. The rings can stop at any angle, and a 90° stop can be set as a working position.
Q: Which standard applies?
A: We follow EN 415-10 for the machine and do the risk assessment to ISO 12100.
